I’ve been loving my Sony ZV-1 for travel vlogs, but I’m ready to move past the built-in microphone. Even with the included deadcat, I’m finding the audio a bit thin, especially when I’m recording outdoors or in crowded spaces.
I need something compact because I don’t want to ruin the ZV-1’s portability. I’m also worried about the mic blocking the flip-out screen or getting in the way of the controls. I’ve been looking at the Sony ECM-G1 for that cable-free setup, but the Rode VideoMicro also seems like a solid choice.
Has anyone found a specific mic that offers the best balance of clear audio and compact size for this camera?
In my experience, go for the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone. Over the years I've tried many, and this is basically the best budget move at $50-60. It’s way cheaper than the Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone. It’s tiny and doesnt need batteries, so it wont ruin the ZV-1 portability. Audio is pretty crisp! Have you checked used prices to save more?? gl
Yo, caught this a day late but honestly I LOVE talking gear for the ZV-1!! Basically the BIGGEST issue with external mics on this camera is that 3.5mm jack placement—it literally blocks the screen if you aren't careful. Technical tip: if you want clear audio without the bulk, you gotta look at how the mic handles vibration... if the shock mount is too big, it ruins the portability and gets in the way of everything. Sooo for your situation, I highkey recommend the Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone. It's AMAZING because the shock mount and windscreen are actually built INSIDE the housing. It’s super tiny and won’t hang over the lens or block your controls like some larger rigs. The sound is way more "full" than the built-in mic too, i think it’s perfect for those crowded travel spots where you need to isolate your voice. Also, check the Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone. It’s pretty cool cuz it slides right into the hot shoe for a cable-free setup! It gives you a much wider stereo field which is fantastic for ambient travel vibes. Honestly it's a game changer if you hate wires. gl!
Saw this earlier but just now getting a second to reply. If you want something that feels a bit more solid and wont break easily in a travel bag, I'd look at the Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone. It usually costs around $80. The best part is the shock mount is built inside the mic, so there are no flimsy external parts to snap off. It is super low profile and dont really block the screen much. If thats too pricey, the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone is a solid budget choice for about $40. Its really popular for a reason and feels pretty sturdy. Just make sure you use a right-angle 3.5mm cable so it doesnt poke out and block your screen from flipping properly. I found thats the safest way to keep the setup compact without losing the screen functionality... basically gives you peace of mind while traveling.
Can vouch for this
