Hey everyone! I have been using my Sony RX100 for travel vlogging, and while the video quality is incredible, the internal audio is really letting me down, especially in windy conditions. I am looking for a compact external microphone that won't make the setup too bulky since the whole point of this camera is its pocket-sized portability. I know the Mark VII finally added a mic jack, but I am struggling to find the right balance between sound quality and size. Does anyone have experience with the Sony ECM-XYST1M or a small Rode VideoMicro on this specific series? Which mic would you recommend for getting clear voice audio without needing a massive cage or rig?

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, internal mics are basically unusable outside. I tried some cheap ones and was super disappointed with the quality, but here r two solid options:

Ok so, I remember taking my Sony RX100 VII out to some windy cliffs last year. The footage looked incredible but the audio was literally unusable... just constant wind buffeting. I tried to keep my rig tiny but I realized fast that you highkey need an external solution if you're outdoors. Here's what I recommend for your setup:

  • Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone: I've used this and it's super convenient cuz it uses the Multi Interface Shoe. No messy cables hanging around! It has a frequency response of 70Hz to 20kHz and you can adjust the recording range from 0 to 120 degrees. tbh it's perfect for keeping that pocket-sized vibe.
  • Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone: This is my favorite for pure sound quality. It's a cardioid mic with a 0.5 inch condenser capsule. It doesn't need a battery since it runs on 3V to 5V plug-in power from the camera, but you'll need a small cold shoe bracket to mount it. I guess the main lesson is that while the Sony mic is more compact, the Rode deadcat is wayyy better for wind. If you're vlogging in heavy gusts, the Rode is worth the extra bulk. Just make sure to check ur cable connections so they don't wiggle lose!! gl
