Which compact external microphone is best for the Sony ZV-1?

So I picked up a ZV-1 for a quick trip to Tokyo in two weeks because I didnt want to lug my full rig around but man the audio is driving me crazy. Ive been shooting video for like six years now so I know my way around a histogram and manual settings but this internal mic situation is just a mess. Everyone raves about that three-capsule mic and the little deadcat thing it comes with but honestly? It still picks up way too much background hiss and I swear I can hear the lens motor hunting for focus when its quiet.

I tried using my old Rode VideoMic Pro but its way too big for this tiny body and it makes the whole thing tilt on my Gorillapod which is super annoying. I need something actually compact that wont block the flip out screen because thats the whole point of this camera right? Im looking for something that just sits on the shoe and doesnt need its own battery because I always forget to turn those off anyway.

My budget is like 150 bucks max. A few options I have seen:

  • Sony ECM-G1
  • Sennheiser MKE 200
  • Rode VideoMicro II

Should I just go with the Sony one since its cable-free or is the Sennheiser actually worth the extra bulk? What are you guys actually using that doesnt make the setup feel huge?

Unfortunately that Sony mic was a total letdown. Id grab the Rode VideoMicro II Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone instead, it sounds way better. Lemme know if you need mounting tips!

Like someone mentioned, that internal audio is a total nightmare for vlogging. I switched to one of the Sony cable-free microphones last summer and it was honestly amazing! I love how it just snaps onto the digital shoe without any cords. It made my life so much easier while trekking through crowded markets because I didnt have messy cables getting caught on my gear. Just go with any Sony digital mic, its fantastic!
