Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Sony ZV-1 for my travel vlogs, and while the camera itself is incredible, I’m really struggling to find the right compact tripod to pair with it. I’ve been using a cheap, generic mini-tripod I had lying around, but it feels way too flimsy. I’m constantly worried it’s going to tip over, especially when I have the side-flip screen out and a small shotgun mic attached to the hot shoe.

I’m looking for something that is super portable—ideally small enough to toss into a sling bag—but sturdy enough for stable tabletop shots. I’ve been eyeing the Sony GP-VPT2BT shooting grip because of the Bluetooth controls, but I’m curious if there are third-party options that offer more height or better leg stability for a lower price. Also, a big concern for me is access to the battery/SD card slot; I’d love a recommendation that doesn't require me to unscrew everything just to swap batteries during a shoot.

Does anyone have a go-to compact tripod or vlogging grip that works perfectly with the ZV-1’s specific dimensions? I’d love to hear what’s working for you guys!

I went through this last year and ngl, the struggle is real with the ZV-1's balance. I was constantly worried about my rig tipping over whenever your vlogging with the screen out and a mic attached. I looked at the Sony grip too, but it felt like a lot of cash for something that didn't even solve the battery access problem... Basically, I found that the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony ZV-1 Camera 2936 was the secret sauce. It offsets the mount so you can actually open the battery door while it's still attached to a tripod. For the actual stand, I eventually settled on the Manfrotto PIXI EVO 2-Section Mini Tripod. It’s sooo much more robust than the generic ones and the legs extend slightly which reallyyy helps with stability for front-heavy setups. It fits perfectly in my sling bag too. TL;DR: I solved the battery issue with the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony ZV-1 Camera 2936 and used the Manfrotto PIXI EVO 2-Section Mini Tripod for better stability and a way lower price.

Tbh, most "vlogging" grips on the market prioritize electronics over actual physics. If you're tired of your ZV-1 tipping, you need to look at brands that focus on CNC-machined stability rather than just plastic buttons. * Leofoto MT-03 + LH-25 Mini Ball Head: This is a professional-grade alternative. It’s made of aircraft aluminum and features "spider" legs that fold out to create a much wider footprint than standard tripods. It’s basically the best way to counter-balance a ZV-1 when you have a mic and the screen out.
* Ulanzi Claw Mini Quick Release System: To fix the battery door issue without constantly unscrewing your gear, mount this quick-release base to your tripod. It lets you pop the camera off in about a second to swap batteries and click it back in instantly. Honestly, from a market perspective, you're better off buying a high-quality mechanical tripod from a dedicated support brand like Leofoto or Slik. They handle the front-heavy weight of a rigged-up ZV-1 way better than the generic stuff haha.

oh man i feel u!! the zv-1 is amazing but so front-heavy with a mic. Honestly, the Sony GP-VPT2BT Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander is cool but I highkey prefer the Ulanzi MT-16 Extendable Vlog Tripod cuz it gets way taller—well actually, u gotta get the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony ZV1 Camera too or the battery door is blocked. It basically fixes that whole access issue. gl!

Honestly, I spent way too much time and money trying to find the perfect commercial solution for my ZV-1 before I just decided to go the DIY route. I have a whole drawer of old camera parts and I realized that most of these vlogging-specific grips are just overpriced plastic. I ended up digging out a heavy-duty metal plate from an old setup and spent an afternoon in my workshop figuring out how to offset the mount myself. By using some basic hardware and a bit of trial and error, I managed to shift the camera over just enough so the battery door swings free even when it is tucked onto my favorite mini-tripod. It is not as pretty as the branded stuff, but it is way more solid. I learned a few things from going the self-service route:

  • Weight distribution is everything once that screen flips out.
  • Most consumer grips prioritize weight over actual stability.
  • You can solve the battery door issue with a simple offset plate rather than a full cage. Tbh, if you have some basic tools and some old gear lying around, you can usually hack together something that works way better for your specific workflow than a one-size-fits-all product. It is a bit of a rabbit hole, but doing it yourself lets you prioritize stability over those fancy buttons that I never ended up using anyway.
