What are must-have items for a first-time parent's registry?

I am about 28 weeks along now and honestly I am losing my mind looking at these registry checklists. My husband and I just moved into a smaller apartment in Chicago to save money before the baby gets here in early November and I feel like I am totally drowning in choices. Every website says something different and it feels like everything is just a huge money grab or an ad. Like I was looking at the SNOO because everyone on TikTok says its a lifesaver but then I read these other forum posts saying its actually bad for their sleep patterns long term or that their kid hated it and now I am terrified to put a sixteen hundred dollar bassinet on a registry where my family might actually buy it and then it just collects dust in our tiny living room. We dont have much space so I really need to be super careful about what actually comes into the house.

Then there is the whole stroller situation which is its own nightmare. I saw some people say the UppaBaby Vista is the absolute gold standard for city living especially with the wind and snow we get here but its so heavy and expensive and then other moms say just get a basic Graco frame and call it a day. I dont want to be that person struggling on the bus with a giant tank of a stroller but I also dont want the wheels to fall off in a snowdrift on Michigan Ave. Im really trying to keep the total registry value under 3k if possible which feels impossible when a car seat alone is like four hundred bucks these days. I just need to know what is actually a must have versus what is just fluff that influencers get paid to talk about. Like do I really need a wipe warmer or a special trash can for diapers? My mom says just use a regular bin with a lid but people online say the smell is killer without a Diaper Dekor or whatever. I am just so worried about wasting peoples money or ending up with a house full of junk we never use. What are the absolute non-negotiable items that saved your life in those first three months?

To add to the point above: i actually disagree slightly about the basic stroller frame idea. be careful with those because chicago slush will destroy cheap plastic wheels in a week. i would suggest looking at the Nuna TRVL... its super light but way sturdier for city life. also make sure to use the Amazon Wishlist Chrome Extension to track price drops so you can stay under that 3k budget without buying junk.

Honestly, I've tried many setups over the years and the must haves are way simpler than TikTok looks. In my experience, skip the Snoo and giant Vista stroller for a small Chicago apt.

  • Baby Jogger City Mini GT2: Good for snow but folds tiny.
  • Ubbi diaper pail: Fits anywhere and uses regular bags.
  • Halo SleepSack Swaddles. Forget the wipe warmer, it isnt worth the space and just grows bacteria.

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.

Re: "My buddy told me the exact same thing..." - and honestly, he's totally spot on. When I had my first, I tried to go the budget route with a stroller that had those thin plastic wheels. I thought people were just being gear snobs, but the first time we hit a patch of salted slush, the whole thing just jammed up. I ended up carrying my daughter three blocks in the wind because the wheels wouldn't turn anymore. It was a complete disaster and a total waste of money. With my current setup, I made sure the wheels were solid rubber and the frame felt sturdy. It takes up a bit more room in our hallway but it actually works when I need it to. Same goes for the crib... we skipped the high-tech stuff and just got a solid wood one that doesn't have any apps or motors to break. Reliability is basically the only thing that matters when you're tired and just need stuff to function. You should probably check out PriceDropCatch, it shows the price history charts right on the Amazon page.
