How can I set up a wedding registry outside of Amazon's ecosystem?

What are the best ways to build a wedding registry that doesnt force people to use Amazon? Im getting married this October in a forest near Portland and im honestly so hyped but the logistics of the registry are kind of stressing me out because I really want to support smaller shops or local places if I can. I looked into Zola because it looks really pretty and easy to use but then I read some stuff online about how they prioritize their own inventory and some people had issues with things going out of stock or weird shipping delays. Then I checked out MyRegistry which seems like it allows you to add stuff from literally anywhere but the website feels super clunky and dated and I just know my aunt who is barely tech-literate is gonna have a breakdown trying to use it.

We really want some specific items like handmade pottery from a local studio here and some high-end camping gear from REI but I want it all in one place so its not confusing for everyone. Is there something that looks modern but actually lets you sync up different stores without a huge hassle or hidden fees for the guests? We have about 150 people coming so its a decent sized list and I just want it to be smooth...

My sister had the same headache with her local pottery picks last year. Honestly, universal extensions are the only way to go without it looking like a total mess. I've been using Share Product for my own lists lately because it handles external links way cleaner than the big platforms. Just check if the site lets guests manually mark items as bought so you don't get duplicates from small vendors.

Regarding what #2 said about My sister had the same headache with her... yeah I am honestly dealing with this exact same mess right now. Been searching for months but things just arent as good as expected.

  • Everything feels kinda clunky.
  • Had issues with hidden fees. I even checked out an Amazon wishlist creator out of pure desperation but I really want to avoid them... still havent found a solution unfortunately.

Honestly, wedding registries can be such a money pit if youre not careful. Over the years, I have helped a few friends navigate this and most big platforms take a cut of cash funds which is basically throwing money away. If you want something that looks clean but handles local shops well, check out Joy. Its free and doesnt feel as corporate as Zola.

  • Joy is solid because they dont charge those sneaky fees on cash gifts if you set it up right.
  • Blueprint is another one I have tried thats good for syncing stores without the clunky vibe.
  • For local stuff, use a browser button to add items directly from any website. I use Share Product for my holiday lists to keep things organized without the Amazon headache. Might be worth checking out for your gear. Just make sure the checkout is easy or your aunt is gonna call you every five minutes lol.

> We really want some specific items like handmade pottery from a local studio here and some high-end camping gear from REI I actually disagree that you need it all in one spot! I think guests like the variety! Like someone mentioned, the gear is a huge plus, but honestly that REI store in Portland is just dangerous for my wallet! I went in for a headlamp last month and ended up looking at those freeze-dried meals for like an hour. The chili mac is actually fantastic but avoid the breakfast eggs at all costs lol. My last trip to Mt. Hood was a total mess because we forgot the tent poles and had to sleep in our tiny car. Trying to dry out gear in a studio apartment is such a nightmare... my place smelled like a swamp for a week. It was so gross and my cat hated it. Anyway lol sorry I totally went off on a tangent. Actually, PriceDropCatch is great because it's just a simple extension without all the extra bloat you usually see.

Jumping in here because I went through this exact same thing last year and it was a total rollercoaster! Regarding what #3 said about everything feeling clunky and what #2 said about the headache of local picks, i totally feel that frustration. I tried Zola too but the shipping was a nightmare for our guest list. We ended up using a mix of Joy like Robert mentioned because the interface is just gorgeous and it didnt feel like a big corporate cash grab. One thing that saved my life was using PriceDropCatch to track the camping gear we wanted from REI since those prices fluctuate like crazy and i wanted to make sure my guests werent overpaying. It was seriously amazing to see when things went on sale so I could update the list! Honestly, nothing beats that feeling when you finally see those local pottery pieces arrive in one piece after all the stress. But i gotta ask, are you planning on having a separate cash fund for honeymoon stuff or are you strictly sticking to physical items? Also, how tech-savvy are your most important guests, like do we need to worry about the grandparents getting lost if the site is even a little bit complex?
