so sorry if this is a really basic question i have no idea what im doing here. im moving into a dorm in chicago soon and my dad said he would pay for the stuff i have in my amazon cart but i cant find a way to just... send it to him.

my logic was that there would be like a share button for the checkout page but i dont see one. i was thinking maybe i should just give him my password so he can log in and pay? but that seems risky and i dont want him seeing all my other stuff lol. is there a way to let him pay for my cart specifically without me having to buy it and get reimbursed? i feel so tech illiterate right now...

In my experience, Amazon still hasn't created a simple share cart button, which is frustrating after all these years. I've tried many workarounds to help family members with this exact thing. You definitely shouldn't give him your password because he will see your entire order history and can even change your account settings. Basically, the shopping cart is private to your specific login session and won't show up on his end. I've got a couple of questions before I can give you the best recommendation tho. Are you looking for a one-time solution just for this dorm move, or do you need a way for him to pay for things throughout the whole school year? Also, are you specifically worried about him seeing your past purchases, or is it more about keeping your current cart items private until he actually buys them? Over the years, I've found that the best method depends on how much trust and long-term oversight you want. I have used things like Public Wish Lists or even Amazon Household for shared benefits, but it really depends on those details. Once I know if this is a recurring thing, I can walk you through the most secure way to set it up so you don't have to keep asking him for reimbursements... TL;DR: There is no direct share button for carts. Dont share your password because it reveals your entire history. I need to know if this is a one-time thing or a recurring need before recommending a specific workaround like lists or account linking.

Regarding what #1 said about "In my experience, Amazon still hasn't created a..." - it is so true! Honestly, I dealt with this exact thing when my niece started college and I spent forever looking for a magic button! It was such a headache at first. The safest way I found is basically using the Wish List feature. You just move everything from your cart into a new list, set it to shared, and send him the link. It is amazing because he can just add those specific items to his own cart and checkout. It keeps your private account details totally separate which is vital for security! I actually read a deep dive on Smartphone Board about how sharing passwords can lead to major account compromises even between family members... it is better to be safe than sorry with your digital footprint for sure! Another professional-tier workaround is the Amazon Household thing but that feels like overkill for a one-time dorm shopping spree imo. The list method is fantastic because it preserves your privacy while making the transaction seamless for him. Plus, you get to keep your order history private... which we all know is important lol. Just make sure the list is set to shared so he can actually see the items!

^ This. Also, I totally feel your pain about the checkout process being such a total nightmare! It is honestly so frustrating that a giant company like Amazon makes it this hard to just get some help with the bills! I spent literally two hours last week trying to figure out a similar thing for my younger brother and I wanted to pull my hair out... it is just so unnecessarily complicated. It makes me so nervous thinking about security stuff too because you definitely dont want to just hand over passwords or card info over text even to family. Moving is already so expensive, so I love that youre being smart about the budget! It is so amazing that your dad is helping out since every penny counts when youre a student. Here are some things I found that are absolutely fantastic for saving cash on dorm gear:

  • prime student is a total lifesaver for the free shipping and the extra hidden deals
  • definitely check out the used like new section for things like desk lamps or kettles
  • always look for the bulk packs of snacks since they save so much money over time Honestly it is just such a huge relief when youre staring down those crazy Chicago prices! I really wish they would just fix the cart sharing thing already because it would make life so much easier for everyone on a budget. Good luck with the move, it sounds so exciting!
