Do guests find third-party registries more difficult to use than Amazon wishlists?

Wedding is this July and I'm torn between using Zola or just a plain Amazon wishlist. We have about 100 guests and a lot of them are older family members who aren't great with computers. Zola looks way nicer and lets me pull in stuff from different shops like West Elm but I'm worried people will get confused by the redirecting. Amazon is just so easy since everyone has Prime already but then I'm limited to only what they sell. I want the variety but don't want to make things hard for guests. Do guests find third-party registries more difficult to use than Amazon wishlists?

I went through this exact same thing last year and honestly, go with both if you can! I used Zola for the pretty stuff but let me tell you, the older guests flocked to the Amazon list like crazy. People just trust what they know! Amazon is basically the default for everyone these days because they already have their cards saved and know the checkout process by heart. Zola is fantastic for the aesthetic and those cool custom cash funds, but the redirects to West Elm or Crate and Barrel definitely tripped up my older family members. My aunt literally called me crying because she thought shed left my registry by mistake.

  • Amazon: Zero learning curve and free shipping for almost everyone.
  • Zola: Amazing for group gifting expensive items like sofas or high-end mixers.
  • The Catch: Zola sometimes makes guests mark items as purchased manually if they buy from the external site, which people ALWAYS forget to do. Honestly, Share Product is a lifesaver if you want to share your list with people who dont have an Amazon account or if youre trying to keep track of everything in one spot without the confusion. It makes the whole process so much smoother for everyone involved. I absolutely loved having that extra layer of organization because it saved me so much time answering tech support questions for my relatives! Go for the variety but definitely keep a core list on Amazon for the less tech-savvy folks. It will save you a massive headache!

Just caught this and wanted to add a few technical bits. The main issue with Zola is how it handles external links to other stores. That often just redirects people to the other site, and then the guest has to come back to Zola to mark it as bought manually. My older relatives got lost doing that every single time. If you really want variety without the technical headache, maybe check out MyRegistry because their browser extension is pretty stable for syncing. Also, the Joy platform is a decent alternative because the UI is super clean and less cluttered. Keeping things simple is usually a safer bet for the guest experience. It definitely saves you from getting a dozen phone calls from confused family members while youre trying to plan everything else.

I would actually be cautious about focusing just on the interface because reliability is where the real headaches start. I remember when my brother-in-law built this custom gift portal for his wedding a few years back. He was obsessed with the technical specs and making sure every single API call was perfect. We were all impressed until the week of the wedding when their hosting provider had a massive regional outage right during peak traffic. It was such a mess because they didnt have a proper failover system or any redundancy in place. My aunt called me in a total panic because she kept getting 504 Gateway Timeout errors and was convinced shed crashed the whole wedding... I ended up spending my entire Saturday night looking at server logs and checking their SSL certificate status while everyone else was at the rehearsal dinner. It really makes you think about how fragile the backend architecture is on some of these platforms when you actually look at the uptime data. You might want to consider the database sync latency honestly, because even a minor lag can lead to double-purchases if the site isnt handling concurrency properly.
