I just treated myself to a new Sony Bravia and the picture is incredible, but the audio definitely needs a boost. I am looking for something with Dolby Atmos and eARC support to maximize the setup.

Do you think staying within the Sony ecosystem is best for compatibility, or are there better value options for under $500?

oh man, congrats on the Bravia!! I literally just went through this exact same struggle and it was lowkey stressful lol. In my experience, staying in the Sony ecosystem is great for simplicity but you might be paying a Sony tax that isnt always worth it. I started with the Sony HT-G700 3.1ch Dolby Atmos Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer thinking it would be a perfect match for my TV, but unfortunately it was not as good as expected because it basically uses software to fake the overhead sound and it felt kinda flat... For your situation, here is how I would compare the best options under $500:

  • Option A: The Sony ecosystem. You could grab the Sony HT-S2000 3.1ch Dolby Atmos Soundbar. It works perfectly with the TV remote and fits the vibe, but its just the bar. No dedicated sub means the bass is kinda weak for movies.
  • Option B: The value king. I ended up returning my Sony and got the Vizio M-Series Elevate 5.1.2 Soundbar M512E-K6. It actually has physical upward-firing speakers and rear satellites. Seriously, for like $450, the immersion is way better than any single bar because you get actual surround sound instead of just virtual processing.
  • Option C: The smart choice. The Sonos Beam Gen 2 Compact Smart Soundbar is amazing for music and has eARC, but honestly... once you add a sub later its gonna cost way more than $500 total. If you want the most bang for your buck, Id say go with the Vizio even if it feels weird not matching brands - the eARC works fine across brands anyway. But yeah, hope that helps! peace

In my experience, sony is pricey vs samsung or vizio which iirc have better atmos and earc value... unfortunately my sony bar wasnt as good as expected. ngl go third-party

Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year and found the Vizio M-Series M512a-H6 5.1.2 Channel Soundbar for about $400. After years of testing home theater tech, the Atmos height drivers in this one actually deliver for way less than Sony. It supports eARC perfectly and sounds sooo good. Seriously great value if youre looking to stay under budget without sacrificing performance!
