I've been using the classic MDR-7506s for years, but I need something more accurate for professional mixing. I'm looking for a super flat frequency response and enough comfort for long sessions. I'm specifically curious about the open-back MDR-MV1 versus the MDR-M1ST. Which Sony model provides the most reliable translation for a final mix?
I totally agree that it is time to move on from the 7506, especially since those high-mids can be realy fatiguing over time. If you are looking at the Sony MDR-MV1, it is basically the gold standard for spatial mixing right now, but that price tag is definitely something to think about if you are trying to keep costs down. If you want to save some cash, importing the Sony MDR-M1ST directly from Japan is often the way to go. You get a much flatter response than the old 7506 without spending MV1 money. From a technical side, the M1ST driver is realy efficient and the transient response is tight, though the cable is weirdly short for studio use, so you might need to factor in a few extra bucks for an extension. A few budget tips for these:
Can vouch for this
Been using this for years, no complaints
Saw this earlier but just getting to it now. honestly im in the exact same boat as you... spent the last decade trying to get a mix to translate perfectly off a pair of Sony MDR-7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone but those peaky highs always lie to me. i actually had a client reject a project last week because the low-end was a total mess, and i realized my current gear just isnt reliable enough for critical work anymore. i spent all morning comparing raw frequency response graphs for the Sony MDR-MV1 Open-Back Reference Monitor Headphones and the Sony MDR-M1ST Studio Monitor Headphones and i still cant decide which one to trust. if youre focused on reliability like i am, here is what i check:
