I have a few 14-hour international flights coming up soon and I am really looking for a way to survive the constant engine drone and general cabin noise. I’ve heard Sony is currently the gold standard for noise cancellation, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the different options available right now.
I have been looking closely at the WH-1000XM5, but I am a little concerned about the design. They don’t seem to fold up as compactly as the older WH-1000XM4, and carry-on space is always a bit tight for me. However, my biggest concern is definitely long-term comfort. Since I will be wearing these for nearly a full day, I need something that won't give me a headache or make my ears too hot while I'm trying to catch some sleep.
I am also wondering if the battery life holds up as well as advertised during real-world travel. Does the noise cancellation on the newer model really justify the higher price tag for someone who just wants peace and quiet on a plane?
For those of you who travel frequently, which specific Sony model would you recommend as the ultimate travel companion for comfort and silence?

sooo had a moment to think about this more and honestly, the previous suggestion for the XM4 is solid, but you might find this useful—check out the detailed objective measurements on the RTINGS website. they have specific tests for clamping force and breathability that are key for long flights. i'm a bit cautious recommending the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones for 14 hours because i've seen reports of the thinner headband causing pressure points over long periods. here is a quick technical breakdown:

For your situation, get the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones cuz they actually fold and feel way more comfortable on ur head than the newer Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones model tho

Building on the earlier suggestion about those pressure points, omg i have the exact same problem right now!! I have been stressing over this for like a month because i really dont want to waste a ton of money on something that isnt 100% perfect for my long-haul flight. It is so frustrating trying to figure out if the newer features are actually worth the price when the older ones seem so amazing for packing... honestly i am just as lost as you are and i would love it if we could find a clear answer! I just want to make sure i am getting a fantastic deal on something reliable and safe for my ears, but the more i read the more confused i get... it is seriously such a struggle trying to pick one!
