I finally joined that crossfit gym down the street and realized my old wired buds are just not gonna cut it anymore. Im trying to decide between the WH-1000XM5 over-ears and the LinkBuds S. I love the noise cancelling on the XM5s cause the gym music is literally awful but I'm worried theyll get all gross and sweaty since I tend to sweat a ton during cardio.

On the other hand the LinkBuds seem more secure but idk if they sound as good. My budget is capped at $300 and I need something by next week for my first session. Has anyone used the XM5s for heavy lifting or should I just stick with the smaller ones...

I totally get the gym music struggle, it is usually so bad! Honestly, I tried wearing my Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones to a HIIT class once and it was a total disaster lol. The sound is amazing for sure, but they basically turned into a hot, soggy mess within twenty minutes. Here is why you should definitely go with the smaller ones:

  • Sweat damage is real. The XM5s dont have an IP rating, so all that cardio sweat is gonna ruin the expensive ear pads fast.
  • Security. During heavy lifting or any jumping, those big over-ears just slide right off your head.
  • Portability. The Sony LinkBuds S Truly Wireless Noise Canceling Earbuds are fantastic because they just disappear in your ears. The LinkBuds noise cancelling is actually super impressive for how tiny they are! Youll love them for crossfit.

Unfortunately, Sonys expensive models are not as good as expected for real gym use. I had issues with moisture damage because the protection just isnt there for the price. Save your money and check out the Sony WF-C700N Truly Wireless Noise Canceling Earbuds. Theyre way cheaper and handle sweat better. How much jumping do you do in your CrossFit class? That usually determines if theyll actually stay in or not.
