so i'm trying to decide on new headphones before a big work trip next month and i'm stuck between the sony xm4 and the newer xm5. my daily commute on the train here in chicago is honestly brutal and i need to block out all that screeching.

  • budget is roughly $300 to $350
  • gotta fit in a small backpack
  • used for long flights once a month

i like that the xm4 folds up small but the xm5 is supposed to have better anc... is it actually a big difference? the xm5 not folding seems like a massive oversight for travel. not sure if the sound is worth the extra space it takes up in my bag...

Id go with the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones to save money. They fold flat, which is more reliable for travel, and the noise canceling handles train screeching perfectly.

> the xm5 not folding seems like a massive oversight for travel. ^ This. Also, if size is the main worry, I'm really satisfied with the Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds. Tbh the ANC handles that screeching better than you'd think for buds and they fit anywhere. If you're dead set on over-ears tho, Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones are super light for long flights, even if the isolation isnt quite as elite.

To add to the point above: the folding issue is a massive dealbreaker. I took the XM5s on a trip to Philly last month and they took up way too much room in my personal item. Honestly, I've been pretty disappointed with the build quality lately. My old pair had hinge issues after just six months of commuting on the L. If you're looking to save some cash and still get that folding design, you might want to look at some other options that don't get as much hype.

  • Sony WH-XB910N Extra Bass Noise Canceling Headphones - these are usually way cheaper and still fold flat for a backpack. The bass is heavy but you can EQ that.
  • Look for a certified refurbished Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones
  • I know they're older, but the build felt way more solid to me than the newer ones. Unfortunately, it feels like we're paying more for less portability these days. I'd definitely grab a cheaper model and pocket the extra $150 for your trip instead... those train rides are loud but you dont need to spend $350 to block it out.
