Hey everyone! I'm gearing up for a pretty intense trip next month from NYC to Tokyo, which means I'll be stuck on a plane for about 14 hours straight. I've always been a budget earbud person, but for a flight this long, I know I need to upgrade to something that actually blocks out the engine roar and doesn't hurt my ears after two hours.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to Sony because everyone says their noise cancellation is top-tier, but I'm torn between a few models. My main priorities are comfort and how well they pack into a carry-on. Here is what I'm considering:

  • The WH-1000XM5, which looks super sleek and modern.
  • The older WH-1000XM4, because I've heard they fold up much smaller for travel.
  • The LinkBuds S, though I'm worried the battery might not survive the whole trip.

My main concerns are battery life (it needs to last the whole flight plus layovers) and how hot the ear cups get over long periods. I really don't want to deal with ear fatigue or that 'clamping' feeling halfway across the Pacific. Also, does the noise cancellation on the newer models really make a huge difference with high-pitched engine noise?

Given that I'll be wearing these for basically a full day, which Sony model would you recommend as the ultimate travel companion for long-haul international flights?

Caught this thread a day late but I have some technical thoughts to add. Before I get into the weeds, quick clarification: do you usually wear glasses or have a specific sensitivity to ear pressure? That clamping feeling you mentioned often comes down to the headband tension vs the pad density, and it varies a lot depending on head shape. If youre looking at the specs, the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones actually outperform the older models in the high-frequency range because of the dual-processor setup—it uses the Integrated Processor V1 alongside the QN1. Its way better at filtering out the high-pitched whistling of the jet engines, tbh. If heat is your biggest worry, maybe consider the Sony LinkBuds S Noise Canceling Earbuds. While the battery only hits about 6 hours on a single charge, they solve the hot ear problem completely. Youd just need a quick 30-minute top-up in the case while you eat a meal... definitely something to think about.

Coming back to this, I totally agree with the point about clamping force—thats what usually ruins a long flight for me. If youre worried about the high price of the top-tier models, the Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones are a really solid practical pick. They are way lighter than the flagships, which helps a ton with neck strain when youre stuck in a plane seat for 14 hours. If you prefer earbuds but want better silence than the LinkBuds, the Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Earbuds are definitely worth the extra cash. The ANC is way better at killing that high-frequency engine whistle. Just a heads up, the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Over-Ear Headphones dont fold, which is annoying for a carry-on, but the silence is crazy. Tbh, if you want to save money and stay comfy, the CH720N is a hidden gem for long hauls.

Re: Coming back to this, I totally agree with LindarisSmoth about the clamping force. Honestly, when youre halfway to Tokyo, the last thing you want is a gear-induced headache. Reliability is the big thing for me too... you need something that wont just quit on you over the ocean. tbh there are so many deep dives on this exact comparison already. I saw a really good video on YouTube a while back where a guy actually wore different models for a full 15-hour trip and tracked the battery and ear temp. Just search for something like Sony travel headphone comparison 2024 and it should be like the first or second result. The r/headphones subreddit also has a massive wiki that breaks down the clamp force and heat issues way better than I can here. Definitely worth a quick look before you drop the cash.

Honestly, for a 14-hour haul, you want the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Over-Ear Headphones. While the newer version has a better mic, the XM4 still offers 30 hours of battery life and, crucially, folds into a much smaller footprint for your carry-on. The 40mm drivers handle low-frequency engine drone perfectly, and the clamping force is slightly more relaxed, which helps avoid that mid-flight ear fatigue.
