Hey everyone! I’ve got a massive 14-hour flight coming up across the Pacific next month, and I am honestly dreading the engine drone and the general chaos of a crowded cabin. In the past, I’ve just used some basic wired earbuds or a cheap pair of over-ears, but by hour four, my ears are usually throbbing from the pressure and the sound quality is just too poor to enjoy a movie. I’ve decided it’s finally time to invest in a serious pair of noise-canceling headphones, and everyone keeps pointing me toward Sony as the gold standard.
I’ve been doing some digging, but I’m stuck in a bit of a dilemma between the WH-1000XM4 and the newer WH-1000XM5. On one hand, the XM5s are the latest model, and I’ve heard the noise cancellation is top-tier, especially for higher-frequency sounds like people talking or a baby crying. However, I’ve also seen several frequent flyers mention that the XM4s might actually be better for travel because they fold up into a much smaller footprint. My carry-on is always packed to the brim, so the ability to collapse them is a huge plus.
Comfort is my absolute top priority here. I have a slightly larger head, and some headphones tend to give me a headache after an hour or two because of the clamping force. If anyone has worn either of these for a full-day flight, how do they feel after 10+ hours? Does the padding hold up, or do they get sweaty and uncomfortable? Also, I’m curious about the battery life—I really don’t want to be fumbling for a charging cable mid-flight when I'm trying to sleep.
Specifically, how do they handle that deep, low-frequency engine rumble? Does it completely disappear, or will I still feel that vibration? If you’ve used Sony’s ANC specifically for long-haul travel, which model would you recommend as the best bang for my buck? Is the jump to the XM5 worth the extra cash, or should I stick with the XM4s for the portability?
Oh man, I feel u on the long-haul dread. Honestly, I've used both the Sony WH-1000XM4 and the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones for these flights, and I was realy disappointed with the newer ones. Here is what I recommend:
• Stick with the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. They fold up small, which is basically a requirement if ur bag is full. • The XM5 headband is thinner and unfortunately started digging into my head after hour 6. The XM4 padding is way more plush for us big-head folks lol.
• You cant force the XM5 to stay at MAX noise canceling because of the auto-optimizer. It's super annoying when the plane engine pitch changes and the headphones try to "re-calculate." The XM4 handles that deep rumble perfectly and their cheaper too. I'd definitely save your cash and go with the older model for travel. gl!
Been thinking about your question... check out Rtings.com—it's a great resource for technical 'clamping force' data. since you're worried about comfort, you might want to consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones instead. they're better for larger heads than the Sonys mentioned and handle low-frequency drone like a charm. but yeah, if ur carry-on is tight, the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones are still the best for portability tbh!!
I'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to high-end audio - but I've been doing a ton of research because I'm paranoid about my gear breaking or dying when I'm stuck over the ocean. Tbh I had a really hard time choosing because I kept seeing reports about the hinges on the Sony WH-1000XM5 being a bit fragile compared to the older style. Since you mentioned your bag is always packed to the brim, that would be my biggest reliability concern - you don't want to reach into your bag and find a snapped headband! I ended up looking into the Sony WH-1000XM4 mainly because the build just feels more tried and true for travel. Also, I was super worried about the battery safety and how they hold a charge over long periods - nobody wants a swollen battery situation in their carry-on. Both models are pretty safe, but the XM4 just feels like a tank compared to the newer ones. A few things I noticed in my own journey:
Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.
Saw this earlier but just getting back to my desk!! I do the trans-pacific haul way too often and honestly, reliability is the one thing that keeps me sane. I used the XM4s for years but recently shifted to the Sennheiser+Momentum+4+Wireless&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless and the 60-hour battery life is actually life-changing... I basically never worry about them dying even if I forget to charge them for a week. Technically speaking, the Sony ANC is fantastic for that low-end 100Hz engine hum, but the Sennheisers have much better frequency response for music imo. If youre really worried about the build quality or your head size, definitely look at the Shure AONIC 50 Gen 2. They feel like a tank and the pads are super plush, though they dont fold up as tiny as the XM4s do. The XM5 is cool but that hinge design makes me nervous for a packed bag. I’ve seen too many photos of snapped headbands to trust them in a stuffed carry-on. Plus, the XM4 handles that deep rumble just as well for half the price usually!! TL;DR: XM4 is the portability king, Momentum 4 has the best battery/sound combo, Shure is the most durable.
