As Canon just announced the EOS R1, I've been hearing some buzz lately about a potential Sony a1 II on the horizon. As a Sony shooter, I'm really curious to know if anyone has come across credible rumors or leaks about this camera.

What sort of specs and improvements do you think we can expect over the original a1? Will Sony push the boundaries even further with the a1 II?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, predictions, and any inside information you might have come across.

^ This. Also, saw this earlier but just now responding. Honestly, I am kinda disappointed with how these high-end bodies are performing lately. Everything feels like it has a catch or some glitch. If you are looking for absolute reliability and performance, the current options have some real downsides:

  • Sony a1 Mirrorless Camera: It is fast, but unfortunately the overheating issues during high-res bursts are still a thing. I had issues with it shutting down once during a critical moment, which is a total nightmare.
  • Sony a9 III Mirrorless Camera: I was excited for this, but the image quality is not as good as expected. The noise in the shadows is pretty bad for such an expensive kit, especially if you dont have perfect lighting.
  • Sony a7R V Mirrorless Camera: The autofocus is great, but the sensor readout is way too slow for action. Its just not reliable for anything moving fast because of that rolling shutter. I would be very careful about jumping on the a1 II right at launch. Usually better to wait until the firmware is actually stable and proven safe... dont want to be a beta tester for six grand.

Canon EOS R1 will not released until late 2024. So Sony a1 Mark II is expected in early 2025 or later.

Stumbled upon this discussion after seeing some of the frustration. Like someone mentioned, there are some gripes with the current tech, but honestly I am quite satisfied with the performance lately. I havent run into major issues and the current gear works well for me. I think we should look at what is already on the table before jumping on the a1 II hype:

Pros: The 50MP sensor is still king for detail and resolution.
Cons: It demands high-speed media like the Sony 160GB CFexpress Type A Tough Memory Card to really shine without buffer lag.
Compatibility: Great with the full GM lens range, though you gotta keep your firmware updated for the best tracking performance.

Pros: Global shutter is a total game changer for flash sync and fast action.
Cons: 24MP resolution feels a bit small if you are used to cropping in like you do with the a1.
Compatibility: Uses the same battery system, which is nice, but the body tweaks mean some older cages or L-brackets wont be compatible. I am not convinced we need a Mark II immediately when the current flagship is still this capable if you set it up correctly.

Could be released until late 2025 for Winter Olympic Games in early 2026.

Rumors about a potential Sony a1 II have been circulating, suggesting a focus on further pushing the boundaries of speed and resolution. Expectations are high for improvements in sensor technology, possibly introducing a new stacked CMOS sensor with enhanced dynamic range and higher resolution than the original a1's 50.1 MP. Anticipations include 8K video capabilities at higher frame rates, improved autofocus, and enhanced burst shooting speeds. Potential enhancements in connectivity and user interface might also be on the cards. For the latest and most credible updates, check sources like DPReview, PetaPixel, and Sony Alpha Rumors.
