I've been hearing rumors about the upcoming Sony a1 Mark II and was wondering if anyone has any insights on whether it will feature a global shutter like in a9 III. The current a1 is already an impressive camera, but a global shutter could be a game-changer for video and fast-action photography. What do you think? Any news or speculation?

@p_pp445 - good point! Honestly, I'm kinda nervous about them putting a global shutter in the a1 II just yet. I remember when I first switched over from my Nikon gear to my current setup because I wanted the latest and greatest. I ended up missing a few key shots at a family event because I didn't realize how much the dynamic range would shift on that new sensor compared to what I was used to. It was a big lesson that being an early adopter is actually pretty risky for a beginner like me. You might want to consider a few things before hoping it follows the Sony a9 III:

  • be careful with the base ISO levels because they can be way higher and might mess with your exposure
  • make sure to check if the noise floor is actually gonna be acceptable for your low light work
  • might want to watch out for how it handles different lighting since every sensor type acts differently I would suggest waiting for the reviews to see if it is actually reliable... sometimes the safe choice is way better for your peace of mind, ya know?

I don't mind whether a1 II will feature with Global shutter, just make some improvements over original a1.

@curiouscosmos Yes, better than a1 is more important.

I'm super satisfied with how my Sony Alpha 1 Mirrorless Camera handles things right now. Honestly, the current sensor is a beast for my DIY birding setup. @Reply #5 - good point! Here is why I'm happy even if they skip the global shutter:

  • Dynamic range is huge for those sunrise shots when the light is super harsh
  • High ISO performance is basically perfect for my night shoots
  • Readout speed is already fast enough that I dont see rolling shutter Last summer I spent weeks in a homemade hide trying to get kingfishers diving, and the speed was flawless. I remember messing around with old mechanical shutters and worrying about wear and tear... now I just blast 30fps. If the a1 II just adds that AI chip from the Sony a7R V Mirrorless Camera, I'm good. Global shutter is flashy, but the current tech works so well for my needs.
