What is the best compact gimbal for a Sony a7C II or the CR right now? Im so excited because I just grabbed the C II for a trip to Japan next month and I need to stay super light.

Ive looked at the DJI RS3 Mini and the Zhiyun Crane M3S but Im kinda torn. I read the RS3 Mini is the best for travel but some people say the clearance for the flip out screen is really tight and might hit the motors.

My budget is around 350 and I need it to fit in my 6L sling alongside my camera. Is the RS3 Mini actually fine with these bodies or is there a better tiny option?

The DJI RS 3 Mini 2kg Payload Lightweight Gimbal is honestly your best bet for those bodies. Im really satisfied with the 795g weight specs since it keeps my 6L sling light. Motor clearance is tight, but if you shift the plate, it wont hit. Plus, you can usually snag it on sale for around $300 lately. Let me know if you need balancing tips!

@Reply #2 - good point! I've seen those tight clearances snap tiny cables on older setups when people force it. In my experience over the years, the Zhiyun Crane M3S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal is a much smoother fit for the a7C series flip screen and stays within budget tho.

  • Stick to light primes like the Sony FE 24mm F2.8 G Lens for easier balancing.
  • Pack the gimbal arms completely flat so it wont take up much room in that 6L sling.

Jumping in here because I had a similar scare recently. I was traveling with my Sony a7C II and tried to go as light as possible, but I almost ruined the motor because the clearance was just too tight. It's a bit nerve-wracking when you cant even flip the screen out without worrying about it hitting the arm. Honestly, I would suggest looking at Zhiyun instead for this kind of setup. Ive had way better luck with their design philosophy when it comes to smaller cameras. I remember one time in a super crowded street, I bumped my rig and the gimbal just went limp because it couldnt handle the weird weight distribution of the lens I had on. It was a total nightmare trying to recalibrate it while people were pushing past me. If youre heading to Japan, you definitely want something that feels more reliable. Just get any of the compact ones from Zhiyun and youll be set. They seem to handle the offset of these newer Sony bodies a bit more naturally than other brands Ive tried. Just a word of caution though... always check your cables and clearance twice before you power up. I once had a cable get snagged during a pan and it nearly ripped the port right out of the camera. Its easy to get caught up in the excitement of a trip and skip the safety checks, but with these tiny setups, the margins are tiny too. Be careful with those motor locks as well, they can be finicky if youre rushing.
