I've noticed my new Sony a7S III tends to overheat and shut down after about 30 min of continuous 4K 60fps video recording. Has anyone else encountered this and found any good workarounds to extend the recording time?
^ This. Also, honestly, I've been super satisfied with how mine performs once I tweaked the internal settings. You gotta change the Auto Power OFF Temp to High in the setup menu. The default setting is way too cautious and shuts the camera down long before it's actually in danger. It basically just protects your hands from feeling the heat, it wont actually hurt the sensor. Another thing that works well is just keeping the LCD screen flipped out and away from the body. It helps dissipate the heat much faster since that back plate gets quite warm. I've been using the Sony CEA-G160T 160GB CFexpress Type A Memory Card and it seems to run a bit cooler than my old SD cards did during long bursts. If you're doing a really long shoot and want some extra peace of mind, adding a SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony Alpha 7S III actually helps pull some heat away from the body. It acts kinda like a heat sink. No complaints since making those small changes, it's been totally reliable for me. Happy to walk you through the menu if you cant find the toggle.
> noticed my new Sony a7S III tends to overheat and shut down after about 30 min Honestly i have had the exact same issue and it is pretty disappointing for a body that costs this much. Youd think Sony would have perfected the thermals by now but here we are. I ran into this during a summer gig and it basically killed my workflow for an hour. If you want to keep costs down, stop using the internal batteries for these long 4K 60 stretches. The battery itself generates a massive amount of heat right next to the sensor while it is discharging. I switched to using a SmallRig NP-FZ100 Dummy Battery and power the camera from an external source like the Anker PowerCore 26800mAh. Keeping the power source outside the camera body helps a lot more than you would think. Few other cheap things that helped me:
From what I know, overheating can be a common issue with many mirrorless cameras when shooting 4K video, especially at higher frame rates like 60fps which generate more heat. Some potential things that may help extend recording times:
