I just got my new Sony a7SIII and I'm super excited to start shooting with it. I know it has dual card slots that support both CFexpress Type A and SD cards. What memory cards would you recommend for optimal performance and reliability? I shoot a mix of photos and videos.
Jumping in here... honestly, I was pretty stressed about the cost of cards when I first started out with the a7S III. I ended up grabbing the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A Gold 160GB after seeing a few reviews and I have been so happy with it. It handles those heavy 4K 120p files without any stuttering. For my B-slot, I usually just run a Sabrent Rocket V90 SDXC 256GB for redundancy. Its a solid combo that didnt totally murder my bank account like the first-party cards would have. Been using them for months now with zero complaints. Quick tips:
a7S III supports UHS-II SD cards and CFexpress Type A cards, if you want to get best performance, just get theCFexpress Type A cards, these cards have faster speed, yet price is not very expensive now.
Has anyone tried Nextorage CFexpress Type-A cards? these cards seems much cheaper than main brands.
To add to the point above: having that redundancy is a total lifesaver! I have been using the a7S III for years now and honestly, I wont ever go back to cheap cards after a nightmare fail I had at a wedding once... it was terrifying. Now I am obsessed with the Sony TOUGH CFexpress Type A 640GB for my primary slot. It is absolutely amazing because these things are practically indestructible and the write speeds are insane. Basically, if you are doing a lot of 4K 120p, the CFexpress is just a different world. The buffer clears so fast you dont even notice it. I also pair it with a Delkin Devices BLACK SD UHS-II V90 128GB in the second slot for backup. The Delkin Black series is awesome because they have that lifetime warranty and the build quality is fantastic. Having that combo makes the camera feel so much more reliable during long shoots. Definitely worth the investment if you are serious about your footage!
Quick reply while I have a sec... honestly, I had a pretty disappointing experience trying to save money on cards when I first got my S3. Trying to get away with just any V90 SD card for 4K 120p seemed fine at first, but unfortunately, buffer issues popped up during a shoot that almost ruined the whole day. Its frustrating because the camera is so capable, but the media becomes a huge bottleneck if the sustained speed isnt there. If you really want to unlock what this thing can do without stressing about dropped frames, here is what I eventually switched to:

Nice, didn't know that
I've been using Sony Tough-G SD cards (UHS-II, V90 rated) in my a7SIII and they've worked great for both stills and 4K video. They're not quite as fast as CFexpress, but they're more affordable and still plenty capable for most shooting scenarios. Just make sure to get UHS-II cards to take advantage of the faster speeds.
