seriously losing my mind with these internal batteries on my a7 IV because they just dont last through a full day and it's killing my vibe. i have this massive wedding shoot coming up in Seattle next weekend and im so stoked for it but honestly terrified my gear is gonna fail on me again.

my current cheapo power bank keeps cutting out mid-recording which is literally my worst nightmare. i need something that wont overheat or just stop working when the camera pulls too much power. got about $200 to spend and i need it shipped like yesterday. what are the most reliable external battery packs or v-mount setups you guys actually trust for 8+ hour days?

I had a huge scare last year during a rainy outdoor shoot where my generic bank just gave up. Super stressful. Switching over to the SmallRig VB99 Mini V-Mount Battery 99Wh was the best move I made. Honestly, its been a total lifesaver. I am so satisfied with how it handles the a7 IV power draw without getting hot or cutting out mid-take. One unit basically lasts me a whole day of video and photos without needing a swap. Quick tips for your Seattle trip:

  • Use a cable like the Anker 543 USB-C to USB-C Cable 100W to ensure it handles the PD power draw properly.
  • Keep the battery in a small pouch if it gets really misty out there. The VB99 fits in your budget and usually ships fast from most big retailers. Its been solid for me and I havent had one complaint since switching.

Unfortunately, I have had issues with many expensive setups that were not as good as expected for the price. Quick clarification tho, are you mounting this to a cage or just pocketing it?

Jumping in here because I've had some really sketchy experiences with power banks overheating mid-shoot. You gotta be really careful with the a7 IV because it draws a lot of juice when recording 4K, and if the voltage drops even slightly, the camera just cuts. Honestly, for a wedding where you cant miss a moment, I would suggest staying away from the cheap stuff and going with something that has a dedicated PD output. Safety is the biggest thing for me so I usually stick to brands that have built-in thermal protection. Here are a few things I'd check:

  • Make sure the bank supports at least 30W Power Delivery. If it's lower, the camera might drain faster than it charges.
  • Use a high-quality cable like the Anker 765 USB-C to USB-C Cable 140W 6ft. A bad cable is usually why banks cut out because they cant handle the constant draw.
  • Consider the Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K 140W because it has a screen that shows exactly how many watts are being pulled and the temperature. If you want to be extra safe, look into the Sony NPA-MQZ1K Multi Battery Adaptor Kit. It holds four NP-FZ100 batteries. It is way more reliable than a USB power bank because it uses the battery terminal, so you dont have to worry about the USB-C port getting loose or failing during a ceremony. Just be careful with dummy batteries from brands you've never heard of tho... I've seen them fry internal boards before.
