I recently got a Sony a7 IV mirrorless camera and am still learning all the controls. How do I adjust the f-stop to control the aperture size and depth of field in my photos? I've looked through the menus but can't seem to find the right setting to change the f-stop.

Do I need to be in a certain shooting mode? Is it a physical ring on one of the lenses? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Changing the f-stop on your Sony a7 IV camera can be done in a couple different ways depending on the lens you have attached.

If you have a Sony E-mount lens with an aperture ring, you can directly control the f-stop by rotating that ring on the lens. This will let you adjust the aperture size to control depth of field. Just note that some lenses have "clickless" aperture rings that rotate smoothly, while others have click stops at each f-stop increment.

For lenses without an aperture ring, you can change the f-stop through the camera body. Go into the shooting menu and find the option for Aperture Priority mode. This will let you use the control dials to set the specific f-stop you want to use. The camera will then select the appropriate shutter speed automatically based on your set ISO.

You can also change the f-stop in Manual mode on the a7 IV. In Manual, both the aperture and shutter speed settings are fully adjustable, giving you total control.
