I'm planning a trip and want to invest in a camera that will give me great travel photos. I'm considering Sony options, but I'm unsure which model would be best for travel photography. Should I go for a mirrorless camera like the A7R3 with a versatile lens, or would a compact option like the RX10 be more suitable? What are the pros and cons of each, and what lenses should I consider for different travel scenarios? Any advice on memory cards and backup solutions would also be appreciated!
Honestly, I spent way too much money trying to find the perfect travel setup and mostly ended up disappointed. I dragged the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV through Europe last summer thinking the massive zoom range would save me, but the small sensor was such a letdown in low light. Every evening shot came out noisy and just... flat. Not what I wanted for the price. I eventually realized that chasing the latest specs is a total trap for your wallet. I went back to a used Sony a7 III which is still a workhorse and way more cost-effective these days. It handles the dynamic range so much better than the compacts. I usually pair it with the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens. It is honestly the only lens you need for travel and it keeps the weight down so you arent miserable by noon. For storage, dont waste cash on those crazy expensive V90 cards if youre just doing photos. I just use a couple SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I cards and theyve never failed me. Tbh keeping it simple is better when youre actually on the move.
