I recently got my hands on the incredible Sony a7R V and I'm super excited to start shooting with it! However, I want to make sure I'm using the best possible memory card to take full advantage of its capabilities.

I've heard that the a7R V can shoot up to 8K video and has a high-speed continuous shooting mode. With that in mind, what memory cards would you recommend for optimal performance? I'm looking for something reliable, fast, and with enough capacity for longer shooting sessions.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

@robert I use this card with my A7IV. With this card, I can shoot 10fps uncompressed RAW without any lags at all. Definitely worth it.

For faster speed and good performance, get CFexpress Type A cards, such as Sony Tough G CFexpress Type A and Lexar CFexpress Type A Gold.

For budget choice, get UHS-II SD cards, such as SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II.

Re: "Get any of fast CFexpress Type A cards..."

  • I definitely agree with the move to Type A for this body. If you are shooting 8K or long bursts of 61MP files, you need something that doesnt throttle when it gets warm. Ive been really satisfied with the Exascend Essential 240GB CFexpress Type A. Heres how it stacks up against another alternative I tested:
  • Exascend Essential 240GB CFexpress Type A: Super stable sustained writes. It seems to have better thermal management than the Sony cards, so it runs cooler during long sessions. Very reliable.
  • Pergear Professional 520GB CFexpress Type A: Much better value per GB. It works well for high-res stills, tho I trust the firmware stability of the Exascend slightly more for mission-critical video. I honestly prefer the peace of mind with the Exascend for the a7R V. It just works without getting the camera too hot and I havent had a single buffer hang yet.

Some UHS-II V90 SD cards are also good, while price is much cheaper than CFexpress Type-A cards. For example: SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II.

I use Lexar CFexpress Type A SILVER Series Memory Card, cheaper than Gold Series, but works good on my a7R V.

For the a7R V, you'll want CFexpress type-a cards with fast write speeds to keep up with the high MP files and continuous shooting. I suggest looking at Cfexpres Type-A cards from brands like Lexar, Sony, ProGrade Digital or Delkin. Something like the Lexar CFexpress Type A Gold series cards are excellent choices that provide very good performance in the a7R V.

Other than CFexpress Type-A cards, the best memory card is the Sony TOUGH-G series UHS-II SDXC card, specifically the SF-G128T/T1 model. This card offers read speeds up to 300 MB/s and write speeds up to 299 MB/s, making it ideal for high-resolution photos and 8K video recording. Its robust build also provides enhanced durability against water, dust, and impacts, which is perfect for demanding environments. The high write speed ensures quick buffer clearing, essential for continuous shooting at the high megapixels that the a7R V supports.
