I recently upgraded to a Sony FX3 for my videography business and need advice on gimbals. Currently considering the DJI RS 3 Pro, Zhiyun Crane 3S, and Moza Air 3.

My setup typically includes the camera body, a 24-70mm lens, and sometimes a monitor. I shoot mostly weddings and corporate events, so battery life and quick balance adjustments are essential.

Anyone using these with an FX3? Would love to hear about your experiences, especially regarding payload capacity and reliability.

Get the DJI RS 4.

Tbh I gotta disagree with just jumping on the newest model and expecting it to be perfect right out of the box. The FX3 with a 24-70mm is a tricky combo because that lens shifts its weight so much when you zoom. If you arent careful with the DIY side of the setup and maintenance, you're gonna end up putting way too much stress on the motors and burning through your battery life way faster than the specs claim. Before you settle on any unit, you really need to be aware of the technical pitfalls of these setups:

  • Balancing with the lens zoomed to its midpoint rather than just at 24mm to keep the motor load even
  • Management of the monitor cables which often cause invisible drag and ruin your stabilization without you noticing
  • Learning to manually adjust the motor stiffness and PID settings instead of just hitting auto-tune every time
  • Regularly checking the motor power data in the app to make sure you arent hitting 80 percent plus load just sitting still Basically, if you dont learn to service and calibrate the gimbal yourself, you will hit issues regardless of the brand. That 24-70 is heavy and shifts the center of gravity way more than people realize, so you gotta stay on top of the manual settings or those wedding shoots are gonna be a nightmare for your gear.

I think DJI RS 4 mini is OK for FX3 and 24-70mm lens.

Zhiyun Crane 4 is worth considering if you want to save some money. It handles the FX3 beautifully and the new algorithms make balancing much easier than previous generations. The only downside is the app isn't quite as polished as DJI's, but for the price difference, it's hard to complain.
