Regarding what #7 said about "Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming..." - it really is awesome to see everyone helping out! I had to jump in because while Godox is cool for the price, if you really care about technical specs and raw speed, you gotta look at native or high-end performance gear. I remember doing this high-stakes sports awards shoot last year and my old flash just died on me right during the trophy lift... total disaster! I spent the whole night worrying if I even got the shot because of the recycle lag. Heres why I think you should look beyond the budget stuff for an a7S III:

  • The Sony HVL-F60RM2 is incredible because it actually communicates with the cameras face detection to optimize exposure and white balance. Its literally built to fire up to 200 times in a row at 10 fps without breaking a sweat!
  • If you want something with a killer interface, the Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight for Sony is fantastic. It has a massive color touch screen that makes changing settings in a dark venue so much faster than clicking through tiny buttons. The technical integration on that Sony unit is the real winner tho... it handles heat like a total champ because of the upgraded internal materials. It basically never throttles even when youre firing off shots like a machine gun!

Building on the earlier suggestion, Ive honestly been pretty disappointed with how some of these newer units handle heat lately. They just dont feel as solid as they used to, and it totally reminds me of my cousin who tried to DIY a repair on his speedlight after it took a tumble. He figured since he was handy with a soldering iron he could just swap out the capacitor himself... what a total mess that turned into. The guy spent three days hunting for parts online and ended up with a pile of plastic and wires on his kitchen table that never worked again. He was so frustrated he almost swore off photography entirely for a few months. It was a whole ordeal that cost him more than just buying a replacement would have. But yeah, anyway.
