Looking for the best flash for my Sony a7CII. I need something compact and reliable. My budget is around $400. Which flash models are recommended for this camera?

Late to the party but I have spent way too much time looking into this for my own setup. Honestly, with a $400 budget, you have some really solid options that actually perform well without being total bricks. Just curious tho, what is your main priority—is it pure size or recycle speed? Like, are you shooting fast-paced events where you cannot miss a shot, or do you just want something for casual fill light? If you really care about performance, you gotta skip the AA batteries and go for Li-ion. I have been using the Godox V1-S Round Head Flash and even though it looks a little goofy on the small a7C II body, the recycle speed is crazy fast at about 1.5 seconds. Plus, the round head gives a much nicer falloff. If that feels too bulky for you, check out the Sony HVL-F28RM External Flash. It is super tiny and was basically made for the compact alpha series. It integrates perfectly with the cameras face detection which is a cool perk, though it wont recycle as fast as the Godox V1. Both are well under your budget!

Godox V860 III.

So basically the thread is pointing you toward Godox for value or that Nissin i400 for a solid mid-range pick with AA batteries... and definitely stay away from the guts of the flash unless you want a massive shock like the last guy mentioned! That DIY warning actually reminded me of when I first started out and tried to build my own lighting rig using stuff from the hardware store. I was convinced I could make a pro-level softbox out of a giant cardboard box and some white trash bags. I spent like six hours in the kitchen cutting and taping everything together while my dog just watched me like I was losing my mind. I even tried to use those big halogen work lights that get super hot and I almost melted the whole contraption onto my carpet within five minutes. I still have the singe mark on the rug to prove it lol. My wife was so mad... I ended up just buying a cheap kit online anyway. Anyway lol, sorry I totally went off on a tangent there.

stumbled on this thread today... ngl ive gone through like four different setups with my a7c bodies over the years and found that what works for one person totally fails for another. before i give my two cents though, what are you actually shooting? like is this for professional indoor events or just some fill light for casual street stuff? honestly though, you should probably just check out youtube. i remember seeing a killer video last month where someone did a massive shootout of like five compact flashes specifically for the a7cii. just search best compact flash for sony a7cii and its basically the first result. it covers everything way better than we can here tbh.

I bought a Godox TT350S for my a7C, but honestly, the recycle time was disappointing. It's compact though. For the price (~$85), maybe worth a try, but I'm looking to upgrade.

Godox flashes are recommended.

> "It uses four AA batteries, giving decent recycle times." Totally agree - the power source is basically EVERYTHING for recycle speed. Just wanted to jump in with a quick warning though - if you're a DIY enthusiast like me, be CRAZY careful with flash units. These things use high-voltage capacitors that can store like 300V+ even after you pop the batteries out. I'm all for self-service on most kit, but flashes are kinda different - you can get a massive jolt if you dont know how to safely bleed that charge. Tbh, I'm not 100% sure if these newer compact models always have bleed resistors built-in, so it's sorta risky to mess with the internals yourself. Unless you're really familiar with the circuitry, pro service is definitely worth the cash. Just something to keep in mind before you try to crack one open to fix a loose mount or something!

Beyond the usual Godox recommendations, consider the Nissin i400. Its guide number (GN) of 40 at ISO 100 is respectable for its size (85x61x85mm). It uses four AA batteries, giving decent recycle times. TTL works well with my a7CII. I've had no complaints regarding color temperature consistency either. Just be aware of its limited power compared to larger flashes.
