I recently got the new Sony a7 IV and want to get a reliable, high-performance CFExpress Type A card for 4K 60p video recording and fast burst photo shooting. Any recommendations on the best options currently available?

Been shooting with Sony bodies for years now and honestly, the Sony tax on their own cards is just wild. In my experience, you dont need to spend that extra cash just for the name. I've switched over to ProGrade for almost everything lately because their quality control is top notch and they actually test for long-term reliability. Here is why I'd go with them:

  • Real world sustained speeds: Most cards brag about peak speeds but the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A Gold 160GB actually maintains the high bitrate needed for 4K 60p without those annoying buffer pauses.
  • Card health: You can use their software to see if the card is wearing out before a big shoot, which is a lifesaver.
  • Build: They feel just as solid as the Tough series but usually save you enough for a few extra batteries. I have tried many different brands and these have never corrupted a single frame on me. If you're doing high burst photos or long video takes, definitely stick with a brand that focuses on the pro market like this. The ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A Gold 480GB is also a killer option if you have the budget and hate swapping cards mid-day.

I've been using the Sony TOUGH CFexpress Type A 160GB card in my a7 IV with great results. It has very fast read/write speeds up to 800MB/s which easily handles the high bitrate 4K video and clears the buffer quickly when shooting bursts. The tough construction is also reassuring. It's pricey but worth it IMO.

Just saw this and honestly, picking a Type A card is such a headache lately. I have been pretty disappointed with how many of these cards look great on paper but then throttle their sustained write speeds once they get a bit warm. It is super frustrating when you are paying a huge premium over V90 SD cards for performance that sometimes drops off during a long shoot. To give you a better recommendation, I need to know a couple things:

  • Are you planning to shoot a ton of S&Q frames at the highest bitrates or just standard 4K 60p video?
  • What is your actual hard limit for budget? Tbh the price-per-gigabyte is still kinda brutal on these, and if you dont need the absolute fastest buffer clear for bursts, you might be overspending. Let me know what you are thinking for the price so we can find something that actually holds its speed.
