Just grabbed the a7R V and the resolution is wild but my old lenses aren't sharp enough for this jewelry catalog I'm shooting next week. I need to order something today. I've narrowed it down to the Sony 90mm G and the Sigma 105mm Art. I read the Sigma is technically sharper for the 61MP sensor but then others say the autofocus is way slower than the native Sony glass.

I'm doing a mix of tripod and handheld work here in Chicago and I've got a $1,000 budget. Does the Sigma actually outshine the Sony on this specific high-res body or am I overthinking the sharpness difference...

I ended up picking up the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS and ive been really happy with that decision ever since. I remember doing a shoot for a boutique watch shop here and the autofocus was just... so reliable. I didnt want to risk missing the focus on a tiny detail just to save a few bucks or chase a tiny bit of extra sharpness that nobody really sees in the final print anyway. The Sigma is great, dont get me wrong, but i always prefer staying with native glass when the budget allows. Speaking of budget, i actually found mine for around $800 used in great condition, which left me some extra cash for a better light stand. It works well on the a7R V because the internal stabilization plays nice with the lens oss... which is a lifesaver when you're doing those handheld shots you mentioned. I've never had a complaint about the sharpness on my 61MP sensor. Tbh the technical difference is mostly just people pixel peeping in forums. For a jewelry catalog, the color rendering on the Sony is just so natural. Its a safe bet and i'm satisfied with how it handles the workload without any weird glitches... basically, it just works every time i pull it out of the bag.
