Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a7 IV and I am absolutely blown away by the autofocus and the detail from that 33MP sensor. However, I’ve been mostly shooting with a single 35mm prime, and while I love the look, I’m finding it a bit limiting for my upcoming travels and general everyday use. I’m looking for that one "holy grail" versatile zoom lens that can stay on my camera for about 90% of the time.

I do a healthy mix of street photography, some landscape work, and I’m starting to get more into video. I’ve been looking at the Sony 24-105mm f/4 G because the extra reach is tempting, but I’m a bit worried about the f/4 aperture when the sun goes down. On the other hand, I’ve seen great things about the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art and the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2, but I’m torn between having that constant f/2.8 vs. the extra zoom range.

Weight is also a factor for me since I don't want to be weighed down during long days of shooting. For those of you who have the a7 IV, which zoom lens do you feel best complements the body's performance and resolution? Is the f/2.8 really worth the trade-off in focal length for a general-purpose setup?

In my experience, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is ur best bet for the money. It's usually around $799 and way lighter than the Sigma Art. If u wanna save cash, the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is even cheaper at roughly $699. F/2.8 is basically a must for video and low light... f/4 is just sooo limiting sometimes. gl!

Basically, every zoom is a compromise between aperture and bulk. I went through this last year and was reallyyy cautious about overspending. 1. I grabbed a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for about $650. 2. Saved 300g vs the Art version. It works well for my street stuff, but I’m always extra careful during rainy landscape shoots cuz the sealing isn’t pro-grade. gl!

> I’m looking for that one "holy grail" versatile zoom lens that can stay on my camera for about 90% of the time. In my experience, f/2.8 is totally worth the trade-off. For ur a7 IV, here’s the deal: 1. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: Best for weight and price. Super sharp.
2. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art: Pro-level glass but heavy af.
3. Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS: Great reach, but f/4 is a struggle at night. Honestly, the Tamron is the move. It’s light, fast, and basically lives on my camera. gl!

I have spent way too much time looking at the market data and resale values for these things, and tbh it really comes down to brand philosophy more than just specs. If you want total peace of mind and the best communication between the lens and that a7 IV body, you really should just stick with Sony native glass. Their stuff holds value way better if you decide to trade up later, and the weather sealing is usually a step above the third party options for those landscape trips. But if youre looking at it from a value-per-dollar perspective, the third party manufacturers have really closed the gap lately.

  • Sony: Best for long-term reliability and autofocus consistency.
  • Sigma: Great if you want that heavy, premium feel and pro-grade optics.
  • Tamron: Excellent if youre prioritizing weight and want something that wont break your neck. Anyway, I tend to be more conservative with my gear because I hate dealing with potential firmware issues or compatibility quirks down the road, so I usually lean toward native glass for the safety. But yeah, you basically have to decide if you want the first-party safety net or if youre willing to go third-party to save some weight or cash. Just pick a brand that fits your risk tolerance and youll be fine...
