Ive been shooting Sony for a decade but just swapped my a7R III for the a7 IV and my old 24-70 GM feels like a total brick for my Japan trip next month.

I need something lighter that doesnt compromise on sharpness or AF too much. What is the best all-around zoom lens for Sony a7 IV?

^ This. Also, be careful with third party options. I would suggest Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS because native lenses are way more reliable for tracking focus during travel.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would suggest being careful with f/4 glass if you are doing night shots in Tokyo. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is super reliable, but the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is way lighter and handles low light better. Or check out the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G if you want that extra wide 20mm for narrow streets... just keep an eye on your ISO.

Honestly, ditching the brick for a modern lightweight zoom is the best move ever for travel! I did a similar swap and it is amazing how much more you shoot when your wrist isnt aching. Just be careful with some of the cheaper third-party options tho... some lose that snappy AF you're used to, which totally ruins the experience when you are trying to capture quick moments in the city!

Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷

^ This. Also, be careful about moving away from native glass if you're used to that GM reliability. I once took a third-party zoom to Kyoto and it really struggled with the focus tracking in low light near the shrines. I ended up with a lot of soft shots that looked fine on the small screen but were total bummers once I got home... honestly was pretty gutting. I would suggest looking at the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II instead of some of the cheaper alternatives mentioned earlier. It fixes basically every weight issue the original brick had without losing that snap you expect.

  • The autofocus on native Sony lenses is just safer for the a7 IV's tracking systems especially in crowded streets.
  • You might want to consider how much weather sealing matters in a place like Japan where it can rain out of nowhere.
  • The colors and contrast are gonna stay consistent with what you're used to from your old lens. Ngl, I'd stay away from the third-party stuff if you're coming from a GM. The build quality just feels different and for a bucket list trip, you really want gear you can trust 100% without worrying.
