I’ve finally made the jump to the Sony a7 IV, and while I’m blown away by the autofocus and color science, I’m currently struggling to find the perfect 'daily driver' lens. I really want a versatile zoom that can handle everything from weekend trips to casual family gatherings without me constantly having to swap glass in dusty environments.
I’ve been looking at a few options, like the Sony 24-105mm f/4 G for that extra reach, but I’m worried I might miss the f/2.8 aperture for low-light shots or getting that creamy bokeh in portraits. On the other hand, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art and the Tamron 28-75mm G2 seem like great performers, but I’ve heard mixed things about the weight and the autofocus consistency compared to native Sony glass. Since the a7 IV is such a capable hybrid, I also want something that performs well for video without too much focus breathing.
I’m trying to find that sweet spot between image sharpness, weight, and price. For those of you who have been using the a7 IV for a while, if you could only keep one zoom lens in your bag for all-around shooting, which one would it be and why?
For your situation, I’m still kinda new but I LOVE my a7 IV!! Honestly, I’m always worried about reliability, so I usually stick to native glass for the best AF. Here’s what I recommend: * Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS: The safest 'all-in-one' choice!
* Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: Amazing for low light. Warning tho, some third-party lenses might hunt for focus in video! Native feels safer. Good luck!!
Stumbled upon this today! For your situation, I've been shooting for years but i still feel like a newbie sometimes haha. honestly, ur gonna want f/2.8 for those family shots. I think the Sigma or Tamron zoom options are basically just as good as the native Sony ones but way cheaper. - Third-party: best value, usually lighter
- Sony: pricey, better AF i think saving cash is highkey the move! gl
Honestly, after years of shooting events, I’ve learned that reliability beats a fast aperture every single time. I used to rely on third-party glass to save a few bucks, but I had a few scares where the AF-C just couldn't keep up during a critical moment. If you're worried about dust and video performance, you really need to look at the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G. It’s my current 'go-to' because of a few technical standards Sony hits:
* XD Linear Motors: These are dead silent and way more responsive for the a7 IV's tracking than the stepping motors found in most budget zooms.
* Focus Breathing Compensation: This is a massive feature on the a7 IV, but it basically only works with native glass. It makes video look so much more cinematic.
* Physical build: The weather sealing at the mount is MUCH more substantial on the G/GM lines compared to the Tamrons I’ve used. I mean, f/2.8 is nice for bokeh, but having that 20mm wide end for travel is SO much more useful in the real world. I’d rather bump the ISO a bit and know my AF is locked on...
