For the Sony a7R V with its high-resolution 61MP sensor, you'll want lenses that can match that resolving power. Here are some recommendations:

Sony GM 24-70mm f/2.8 II is practically made for this camera. It's incredibly sharp to match those 61MP, has fast autofocus, and serves as an excellent all-purpose lens. The mark II version is significantly lighter than the original while improving optical performance.

For landscape shooters, the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II provides exceptional corner-to-corner sharpness worthy of that high-resolution sensor. Alternatively, the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 GM if you need even wider perspectives.

Portrait photographers should consider the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM or 85mm f/1.4 GM II - both deliver incredible detail and gorgeous bokeh that will showcase what the a7R V can do.

The Sigma Art series lenses, particularly the 35mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.4, offer excellent resolving power at more affordable prices than Sony's GM line.

For telephoto work, the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II is superb and significantly lighter than its predecessor. If you need more reach, the 100-400mm GM delivers excellent results on the a7R V.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I totally agree that the Sigma Art lenses are a total win for value! But honestly, I have a bit of a different take on what makes a lens 'best' for that beast of a sensor. I spent a few weeks traveling with nothing but old manual glass and a basic adapter, and it was seriously the most amazing experience. Everyone is so focused on clinical sharpness, but sometimes that 61MP sensor needs some soul! The way older optics handle light and flares is just... wow. It really made my travel shots stand out in a way modern glass wont.

  • Look into vintage manual glass
  • Prioritize lens character over lab tests
  • Embrace manual focusing for a slower pace Tbh, while the GM lenses are incredible, the DIY route with older glass is such a blast for weddings because it gives everything a dreamy, nostalgic vibe that clients just love. Its definitely worth a shot!

Consider your budget carefully. While G Master lenses are fantastic, you can get excellent results with Sigma's Art lineup at lower costs. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art II performs nearly as well as Sony's GM version at about half the price. Their 85mm f/1.4 Art is also a great value.
