> Get FE GM lenses, based on your needs. Regarding what #1 said about needing the GM glass, its mostly about the actuator tech. To actually hit the 30fps burst rate with full AF/AE tracking on the a1 II, you specifically need lenses equipped with XD Linear Motors. Older lenses using the SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) system simply cannot move the internal elements fast enough to keep up with the sensors cycle speed.

  • Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II: This is the standard choice. It has four XD motors and is significantly sharper than the first gen at 70mm.
  • Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II: Mandatory for sports. It supports the latest teleconverters without losing much AF speed.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM: If you want to resolve the full 50 megapixels with shallow depth of field, this is the cleanest glass in the lineup.
  • Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS: Extremely balanced for handheld use, which matters if you are tracking fast subjects for long periods. Basically, if the lens doesnt have the XD Linear Motor branding, you are gonna bottleneck that body. Stick to the newer Mark II zooms for the best results.
