I'm planning a big trip to Europe soon and I'm looking for the perfect everyday zoom lens for my Sony a7 IV. I want something versatile so I don't have to swap lenses constantly while walking around cities. I've been eyeing the Sony 24-105mm f/4 for the extra reach, but the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 is also tempting for better low-light shots. Weight is a big concern since I'll be carrying it all day, so I've also considered the Tamron 28-75mm G2. I’m really torn between prioritizing focal range or a faster aperture. For those who travel with an a7 IV, which lens do you find is the best 'one-lens' solution for landscapes and street photography?
> I’m really torn between prioritizing focal range or a faster aperture. Basically zooms are trade-offs. Heavy gear causes fatigue and safety risks... so id suggest the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 as the safest, most balanced choice for ur Sony a7 IV i think??
> I’d suggest the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8... as the safest, most balanced choice Respectfully, I’d consider another option. The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is actually king for Europe. You’ll definitely want that 20mm for tight architecture over the extra reach or f/2.8 tbh.
> I’d suggest the Tamron 28-75mm... as the safest, most balanced choice I've been thinking about this for a bit and honestly... I'm kinda disappointed to see everyone recommending the lighter, third-party stuff. I've had issues with those seals in the past, and they really weren't as good as expected when the weather turned south. If you're doing a once-in-a-lifetime trip, gear failure is a nightmare you dont want to deal with. I’d actually stick to your original instinct with the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS. From a DIY and maintenance perspective, it is a much more solid build. The internal gaskets are superior for keeping out the street grime and fine dust you'll find in busy European cities. Plus, the OSS (Optical SteadyShot) in that lens works together with your a7 IV’s stabilization much better than a lens without it. IBIS alone is often overrated for those really slow shutter shots in dark cathedrals. I've taken a few lenses apart to clean out fungus or grit, and the mechanical assembly in the Sony G series is just more robust. It is a bit heavier, but I’d rather carry a few extra grams than have a lens fail me or get crunchy halfway through a trip... basically just my two cents on staying safe out there.
I've been shooting Sony for over a decade and honestly... some of these suggestions are gonna leave you disappointed. I had issues with those lighter third-party seals during a rainy month in Scotland and they just werent as good as expected when things got messy. If you're doing a big trip like this, stop obsessing over a few grams and focus on what actually lasts.
Yeah I totally agree about that 20mm starting point. From a technical and market research perspective, the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is actually one of the most interesting pieces of glass released recently because it disrupts the standard 24-70mm segment so effectively for travel photographers. Heres how I see the current market options for the a7 IV based on the latest specs and performance data:
Sooo late to the party but oh man, I feel u!! I literally just got back from a trip and was so stressed about which glass to pack for my a7 IV. I ended up choosing the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 because it’s such a fantastic value and doesnt weigh a ton during those long walking days. Honestly, having that f/2.8 for late-night pasta shots in dimly lit cafes was a total game changer for me! You might find this useful—check out the comparison tool on RTINGS or the 'Dustin Abbott' reviews. They really help u see the sharpness differences without guessing. Also, pro tip for the budget: definitely look at MPB or KEH Camera for used gear! I saved so much money buying my Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS used there before deciding it was a bit too heavy for me. I guess the main lesson I learned is that weight matters most when youre walking 10 miles a day, lol. Is the 24mm width realy that important to u for the architecture?? Gl with the trip, itll be amazing!!! peace
