so i finally upgraded to a full frame sony a7 iii and i really need a decent portrait lens for a graduation shoot im doing in like two weeks here in austin. i keep seeing the sony 85mm f1.8 listed as the gold standard for budget builds but then i found some reviews saying the viltrox 85mm mark ii is basically the same thing but way cheaper. im kinda stuck because some users say the viltrox has weird flaring issues while others say the sony is too clinical? i just need something that works for:

  • budget: trying to stay under $400-450
  • use case: outdoor grad portraits and some street stuff
  • must have: reliable eye-af because i dont have time to mess with manual focus

is the extra $150 for the sony actually worth it or should i just grab the viltrox and call it a day?

Get the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8. Its way more reliable for those grad shots.

man i am literally in the middle of this exact same dilemma. i have been shooting for years and i am so happy with my a7 iii but this 85mm situation has me totally paralyzed. i have been staring at my checkout screen for days now and i still havent hit buy because i am so torn.

  • i really want to be satisfied with the Viltrox AF 85mm f1.8 II FE because that price is so tempting for my budget
  • the fear of the eye-af failing me on a gig is the only thing stopping me from saving that cash
  • i have heard it works well for some people but then others say the native Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is the only way to go its been like three weeks of research and i am still no closer to a decision... it is seriously the most frustrating gear choice i have had to make in a long time.
