torn between the Sigma 85mm DG DN and the Sony GM. I keep hearing the Sigma is actually sharper for the a7R V's crazy sensor but the GM might have better colors? I have a wedding in three weeks and about $1100 to spend so I'm leaning Sigma but is the GM worth the extra cash used?

Honestly, you should just grab the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for Sony E and dont look back. I have been using it for a while now on my high-res setup and it works well with that 61MP sensor, plus you will have a few hundred bucks left over for extra batteries or a nice strap. The old Sony is a total classic but it is getting a bit long in the tooth tbh.

  • It is way lighter than the GM which is a lifesaver for long wedding days.
  • The sharpness is basically unmatched at this price point, it is scary good.
  • AF is really snappy and I have no complaints about missing focus during fast movements. I have seen side-by-side comparisons and while the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM has a certain vibe, the Sigma is technically superior in terms of raw resolution. When you are cropping in on those a7R V files, you really want that extra bite and the Sigma delivers. Im super satisfied with the color rendition on the Sigma too, it is very natural and matches well with other modern glass. Save the extra money and put it toward a second body or a fast SD card like the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB. You will be much happier having the extra breathing room in your budget for the big day... anyway, hope you kill it at the wedding!

> torn between the Sigma 85mm DG DN and the Sony GM. I went through this exact same thing when I started out last year. I was staring at my bank account trying to justify the Sony glass, but ended up getting the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E instead. Honestly, I used that extra cash to buy a decent flash and a couple of Sony SF-G Tough Series 128GB SDXC UHS-II cards which were way more useful for the actual shoot. If you're worried about the technical stuff, check out the side-by-side comparisons on RTINGS or DPReview, tho the Sigma holds up surprisingly well against that 61MP sensor. Quick tip: since you're doing a wedding, make sure you update the lens firmware right away. It makes the eye-AF feel way more snappy on the newer Sony bodies.
