I've been a PlayStation guy since the PS2 days and I usually pride myself on knowing my way around hardware - heck I even swapped the internal NVMe on my PS5 the month it launched - but I'm honestly hitting a wall with this external drive situation. My internal 2TB is already redlining because of these massive Call of Duty updates and my PS4 backlog is just sitting there in the cloud because I have nowhere to put it. I bought some cheap HDD off Amazon last week thinking it would be fine for just storing stuff but the transfer speeds are absolutely killing me, like it took two hours just to move a couple of games and now the PS5 is giving me these weird drive not removed properly errors even when I havent touched the thing. I'm getting really anxious that it's gonna corrupt my save data or something.
I need a proper external SSD that can actually handle being plugged in 24/7 without overheating or throwing those database rebuild errors. I know I cant play PS5 games directly off the external but I want to be able to play my PS4 library straight from the drive without the loading times feeling like a step back to 2013.
Heres what I'm looking for:
- Budget is around $130 to $160 max
- Needs to be 2TB minimum because 1TB fills up in like three days
- Reliable controller because I've heard some of these DRAM-less drives stutter on consoles
- USB-C preferred but I guess A is fine if it's fast enough
I was looking at the Samsung T7 or maybe the SanDisk Extreme but then I saw all those reports about the SanDisk ones failing and now I'm second-guessing everything. Is the T7 Shield worth the extra cash for the heat dissipation or is it just marketing fluff? I'm trying to get this sorted before the next big release drops and I'm just spiraling looking at different read/write specs that might not even matter for the PS5s overhead. Any of you guys running a specific 2TB drive that hasnt caused any repairing console storage scares?...

TL;DR: Build your own to get better hardware for less money. I switched to a DIY setup using a Lexar NM790 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD and a UGREEN M.2 NVMe Enclosure 10Gbps. It stays well under your $160 limit. Most pre-built drives use cheaper components that throttle, but this combo handles long transfers without breaking a sweat. It fixed all the weird disconnect issues I had with my old HDD too. Simple and more reliable.

Just saw this thread. I had a similar headache last year when I tried using a generic SATA-to-USB adapter and it kept disconnecting mid-game. Total nightmare. I eventually settled on the Western Digital WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD 2TB because I needed something that wouldnt throttle during those massive 100GB transfers. It has an aluminum casing that acts as a decent heatsink, keeping temps stable during long sessions. Another option I've tested is the Kingston XS2000 2TB Portable SSD. Its super small but feels pretty durable. It is technically a Gen 2x2 drive, but since PS5 ports are capped at 10Gbps, you wont get the full rated speed. Still, the controller stability is solid and I havent seen any repairing storage errors. Both drives fit your budget and handle being plugged in 24/7 better than those cheap mechanical drives. The WD feels more premium tho.

In my experience, the Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD offers superior thermal management, while the Crucial X9 Pro 2TB Portable SSD provides better sustained performance for your PS4 backlog.
