Which controllers are actually necessary for the new PS5 Pro? I just picked one up for my kids for Christmas here in Chicago and I am totally lost with all the options. The console comes with one in the box but I keep seeing ads for a DualSense Edge that costs like 200 dollars which is way over my budget since I only have about 100 bucks left to spend on accessories. Do I really need that expensive one or will a regular one work just as well for them? I dont want to buy something that wont work right with the Pro version or feels cheap. Is there a specific brand I should look for or just stick to the Sony ones? Sorry if this is a super basic question I just have no idea where to start...
Honestly, dont waste that 200 on the Edge. I bought one and unfortunately it felt way too complex for my kids (and me lol), plus the battery life is kinda disappointing. Stick to the basics.
Congrats on the Pro! Honestly, just stick with the Sony brand for now. Since you have a budget, the Sony PlayStation DualSense Charging Station is a total must-have! It is fantastic for keeping the living room tidy and ensures the kids controllers are always ready. Also, grab a PowerA USB-C Charging Cable for PlayStation 5 for those long sessions. Its way more practical than spending 200 on one fancy controller!
Late to the thread but honestly you're fine skipping that expensive pro controller. Its really meant for people who play like 10 hours a day and need those extra buttons on the back. For kids just playing casual games its totally overkill and you're better off putting that cash toward something else. Tbh the base ones are solid enough for 99 percent of people. I've used both and for most stuff, you really wont notice a difference in how it plays. I'm curious though, how many kids are gonna be using the console at once? If they usually play together on the couch then getting a second standard controller is basically a requirement or they'll be fighting over the one that came in the box. Also, what kind of games are they actually into? If they're mainly playing sports games or competitive shooters, controllers tend to get a lot more wear and tear on the thumbsticks and buttons. One thing to keep in mind with the Pro version is that its basically the same ecosystem as the regular console. You dont need specific accessories for it to work right. Just stick to stuff that's officially licensed so you dont run into weird connection issues later. Are you looking for something that adds more utility or just trying to make sure they have enough gear to actually play together on Christmas morning? Knowing that would help narrow down what's actually worth spending that last 100 bucks on.
