What are the best external SSDs for PS5 and PS5 Pro?

So I'm getting a PS5 Pro soon and my current PS5 is already totally full with like three games lol. I have no idea how any of this storage stuff works honestly. I was looking online and there are so many options it's making my head spin. My logic was that an external one would be easier because I am terrified of taking the console apart and breaking a tiny screw or something if I tried to put one inside.

But then I read somewhere that you can only play PS4 games from an external drive? Or maybe that changed with the newer updates? I'm so lost and really don't want to mess anything up. I have about 150 dollars saved up for this and I'm hoping to get something during the Black Friday sales here in Chicago. I just want to be able to store more of my library without having to redownload stuff every time I want to play something else.

What I basically need is:

  • Something that wont break the bank
  • Easy to set up because I am tech illiterate
  • Enough space for like 10 more big games

I saw a Samsung one and a Western Digital one at Best Buy but I dont know if they are actually fast enough for the new Pro specs or if they even work the same way. Sorry if this is a super basic question I just really dont want to waste my money on something that wont work right...

  • Totally! The Pro is gonna be amazing! Basically, use an external for cold storage and move games to internal to play. Specs-wise, these are fantastic:
  • Samsung T9 2TB Portable SSD (insane read speeds!)
  • WD Black D30 1TB Game Drive SSD Quick tip: stick to the USB-A ports on the back of the console, they are way more reliable for high-speed storage!

I absolutely love the energy of getting a Pro! Seriously, that machine is gonna be a beast. ^ This. Also, I know you said you're terrified of the internal install, but honestly... I gotta politely disagree with the idea that external is the best way to go for a Pro user. The speed difference is wild! But look, if you really want to stay external to keep it simple, I totally get that too. Since you're in Chicago, keep an eye on Micro Center or Best Buy for the Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable SSD. It's honestly amazing how small it is, and the 2100MB/s speeds are fantastic for moving those massive 100GB files back and forth. Another killer option is the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 2TB V2. It is built like a tank and handles heat really well which is huge for long transfer sessions. With 150 dollars, you are basically in the sweet spot for a 2TB drive during those Black Friday sales. That is gonna fit like 15 or 20 more games easy, even the huge ones like COD or Rebirth. Just keep in mind that the external drive is basically a holding pen for PS5 titles. You'll spend like 5-10 minutes moving a game to the internal storage when you're ready to play, which is still way better than waiting for a 100GB download on shaky internet... right? It saves so much frustration!

Honestly, dont worry about breaking the console. It is way simpler than it looks, but if you are set on external, just know you cant actually play PS5 games directly off it. You can store them there, then move them back to the internal drive when you are ready to play. It takes like 5-10 minutes vs hours of downloading. For 150 bucks, you can definitely grab a solid 2TB drive during the sales. Here are two I have used that just work:

  • Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD
  • WD Black P40 Game Drive 2TB Setting these up is basically just plugging it into the back USB port and hitting format in the settings. You will be totally fine. If you change your mind about the internal one later, let me know. Its actually just one screw and much better for playing games directly.
