Hey everyone! I hope you're all having a great week. I’m still holding onto my PS4 Pro for now since there are so many backlogged games I need to finish before I even think about upgrading to a PS5. However, I’ve run into a bit of a frustrating situation with my gear lately.

Both of my DualShock 4 controllers are starting to show their age, specifically with the micro-USB charging ports on the top. It feels like the connection has become super loose over the years. Whenever I plug them into the console with a standard cable, the slightest nudge causes them to stop charging. I've tried multiple different cables, so I’m pretty sure the port on the controller is just worn out from constant plugging and unplugging.

I’m looking for a reliable charging dock that can handle two controllers at once. I’ve seen a few online that use the EXT port on the bottom of the controller next to the headphone jack, which seems like a much better solution since those ports are basically brand new on my units. Here are a few things I’m specifically looking for:

  • A dock that has some weight to it so it doesn't slide around my TV stand.
  • Something with built-in overcharge protection so I don't ruin the battery health.
  • Ideally, a dock that has clear LED indicators so I know when they are actually full.

I’ve looked at some of the cheap third-party options on Amazon, but the reviews are all over the place. Some people say they stop working after a month, and others say they actually melted their controllers, which is a total nightmare scenario for me. I’d really prefer something that feels high-quality and won't be a fire hazard.

Does anyone here have a specific brand or model they’ve been using for a long time that they still swear by? I'd love to hear your experiences with the official Sony one versus brands like PowerA or HyperX. What is the absolute best controller charging dock for PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles in terms of longevity and safety?

Hey! I totally get the frustration with those micro-USB ports. They are notorious for getting loose over time, and honestly, it is the main reason I switched to a dock years ago. If you want to save your controllers, using that EXT port on the bottom is definitely the way to go since it is much more durable. In my experience, the gold standard is the Sony DualShock 4 Charging Station Official. It uses a click-down design where you just set the controller on it and push down. It is weighted perfectly so it doesnt slide around when you are trying to dock them, and it uses the EXT port so you dont have to mess with the top connector at all. While it doesn't have its own LEDs, the controller light bar pulses orange and then shuts off when it is fully charged. I have had mine for over five years and it has never let me down. If you really want those dedicated LED indicators, I highly recommend the PowerA DualShock 4 Charging Station Officially Licensed. It is also a bottom-port charger and is officially licensed by Sony, so you dont have to worry about it melting your hardware like those cheap knockoffs. It has a nice heavy base and the lights on the front are super clear. Plus, it has the overcharge protection you mentioned. Tbh, stick with one of these two and you will be set for the rest of the PS4 era.

Honestly, just grab any HyperX dock. They utilize the bottom EXT pins which are way more durable than micro-USB, and they are heavy enough to actually stay put on your desk.
