Which compact tripods work best for the Sony ZV-1?

What compact tripods actually work for the ZV-1 without blocking the battery and SD card door? Ive been shooting video for years and usually use a full cage but I need to go ultralight for a trip to Tokyo in four days so I'm ditching the SmallRig. The problem is that off-center mount point makes every mini tripod I own block the door or sit totally lopsided.

Looking for something under $70 that fits in a jacket pocket but wont tip over if I throw a Rode mic on top. I looked at the Manfrotto Pixi but it seems like it might have the same clearance issues... does anyone have a specific model that actually fits right?

The off-center mount is a total pain on that body. For a trip like Tokyo, the Ulanzi MT-08 Desktop Mini Tripod is basically the best bet. Its mounting plate diameter is narrow enough to clear the battery door hinge. If youre worried about it tipping with a mic, the Joby GorillaPod 1K Kit is decent since the 1kg payload capacity handles the ZV-1 and a mic easily.

Re: "The ZV-1 mount is honestly a safety hazard..." - totally agree lol. Ive been through so many setups trying to fix that balance issue over the years. In my experience, the Ulanzi MT-16 Extendable Vlog Tripod is a lifesaver for travel. Its super slim, fits in a pocket, and the mounting plate is narrow enough to clear the door. Plus it has a built-in cold shoe for your mic.

The ZV-1 mount is honestly a safety hazard if you dont manage the weight properly. Since you are going to Tokyo soon, I would suggest the SmallRig Tabletop Mini Tripod BUT2664 because the mounting plate is narrow enough to avoid the door hinge if you position it just right. You definitely want to be careful with that Rode mic on top, tho. Make sure to always point one of the tripod legs directly forward under the lens to act as a brace. Alternatively, you might consider the Ulanzi MT-16 Extendable Mini Tripod for the side cold shoe. Moving the mic there lowers the center of gravity which is much safer for the camera body. Just make sure the ball head is tightened down hard. Cheap mounts can slip if they arent secured, and you dont want gear hitting the pavement while you are out exploring.

I've dealt with this same headache for a while. If you want reliability without a cage, you basically need a tripod with a mounting platform diameter under 25mm to clear that door.

  • ZHIYUN TransMount Mini Tripod is my top pick for the ZV-1. The top mounting surface is incredibly narrow so it doesnt even touch the battery door hinge. Its solid metal and fits in a jacket pocket easily.
  • Slik Mini Pro III is a bit of an older design but works perfectly here. The head is very narrow and it has a suction cup on the center column for extra stability on smooth tables.
  • Manfrotto Pixi EVO 2-Section Mini Tripod is better than the original Pixi since the legs extend. This helps a lot with the balance issues when you have a mic on top, though the mount is still a bit close to the door. Since you are leaving for Tokyo in a few days, these are all pretty easy to find at most camera shops or online. The Zhiyun is especially solid if you're worried about the weight of a Rode mic making it tip over.
