So I finally grabbed an RX100 VII for my Japan trip in two weeks and I'm honestly so pumped! I really need a tripod that fits the pocketable vibe but I'm getting mixed signals from my research. I was looking at the Manfrotto Pixi because it looks sturdy but then I realized it's a fixed height and won't help if I want to wrap it around a pole. My logic was to maybe get a small GorillaPod instead but then I read threads saying they sag after a month and I dont want my camera faceplanting. I'm trying to stay under $50, what are you guys actually using that doesnt suck? maybe something super low profile...

Honestly, if you're worried about sagging and want something actually durable, stay away from the cheap plastic stuff you find at big box stores. The RX100 VII is light, but you want zero movement for long exposures in Tokyo at night. I would suggest going with an all-metal build for peace of mind. Plastic joints tend to fatigue over time, especially with the heat and humidity you might hit... you dont want the legs getting soft on you. Take a look at these two options that are way more stable than the flexible ones:

  • SmallRig Tabletop Mini Tripod with Ball Head BUT2429
  • This is solid aluminum and handles up to 10kg, so your Sony wont even make it flinch.
  • Ulanzi MT-24 Metal Desktop Tripod with Cold Shoe Ballhead
  • It has extendable legs that click into place which gives you a bit more height without losing the low-profile vibe. Make sure you check the locking mechanism on the ball head before you head out. A lot of these small heads have a tiny bit of creep after you tighten them. When you're setting up a shot, maybe aim slightly higher than your target and let the gear settle into place. Also, since you're going to Japan, having a tripod that doubles as a solid handgrip for video is gonna be huge for those crowded street walks. Just dont forget to pack a spare hex key if the legs have tension screws so you can tighten them if they get loose from all the folding and unfolding during travel.

> My logic was to maybe get a small GorillaPod instead but then I read threads saying they sag after a month In my experience, those flexible joints eventually fail. I have used the Pedco UltraPod 3 Lightweight Compact Tripod for years because it is more technically sound. It includes a built-in velcro strap for mounting to poles or branches, which is basically safer than a GorillaPod. It is super light and fits the RX100 perfectly without any sagging issues... plus it wont break your budget.

Be careful with those flexible legs, honestly. I once watched my camera slowly tilt toward a stone ledge because the joints gave out. Sticking with the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod Black MTPIXI-B is probably safer. It is super solid for an RX100. Make sure to check your surface is flat, but it definitely wont drop your gear like those saggy alternatives do.
