Hey everyone, I have been using my Sony ZV-1 for a few months now, and while I absolutely love the 4K footage and that lightning-fast autofocus, I am really struggling with the ergonomics. My hands aren't even that big, but the camera body feels so tiny and slippery that I am constantly worried about dropping it during a shoot.

The main issue I am facing is when I am out vlogging or doing handheld b-roll. The built-in grip just does not give me enough surface area to hold onto securely. Also, a huge pain point for me is the tripod mount location. Every time I need to swap out the battery or grab the SD card, I have to unscrew my current mini-tripod because it blocks the door. It is getting really frustrating to deal with in the middle of a shoot, especially when I'm trying to catch a specific moment before the light changes.

I have been doing some research, and I am stuck between a few different types of external grips. I have seen the official Sony GP-VPT2BT wireless shooting grip, which looks cool for the remote controls, but I have also seen those wood-style side grips and the baseplate extensions from brands like SmallRig or Ulanzi. Some people say the L-brackets are better for stability, while others prefer the simple screw-on baseplates that just extend the bottom.

I am looking for something that meets these specific needs:

  • Provides a more substantial handle for better stability during handheld walking shots.
  • Allows me to open the battery and SD card door without having to remove the grip or the tripod plate.
  • Does not add so much bulk that I can't fit the camera into a small jacket pocket or a compact tech pouch.

I would really appreciate hearing about your personal setups. Have you found a specific grip that feels natural but keeps the camera portable? Are there any specific models that offer an extra cold shoe mount for a microphone while still improving the handle?

What are the best external grips for the Sony ZV-1 that you would recommend for someone who wants better handling without turning it into a giant rig?

> I am looking for something that meets these specific needs: Provides a more substantial handle... Allows me to open the battery and SD card door... Does not add so much bulk... Yo!! For your situation, I totally recommend the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony ZV-1 2936 because it's basically a lifesaver for that battery door issue!! It's amazing because it moves the mount to the side so you can swap batteries and cards without removing your tripod. Plus, it adds just enough height for a better grip without being bulky. I'd honestly be super careful with those cheap plastic knockoffs tho... they feel kinda flimsy and I'd worry about the camera falling. Seriously, stick with SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony ZV-1 2936 or the Ulanzi R054 Metal Baseplate for Sony ZV-1 for better reliability. Just don't overtighten the screw cuz you might damage the mount! It makes the camera feel way more secure!! gl!!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option. I found big rigs too bulky, so maybe grab the Neewer Camera Base Plate for ZV-1? It's a decent, cheap option that fixes the door access without losing pocketability!

Honestly, I have been messing around with these tiny cameras for years and the ergonomics are always the biggest trade-off. If you are looking to save some money, I think there is a version by JJC that does exactly what you need. Not 100 percent sure on the exact specs, but IIRC it is the JJC Camera Hand Grip for Sony ZV-1. It should give you that extra bit of handle to hold onto without spending a ton of cash like you would on the official Sony stuff. Another option that someone told me about, though I havent tested it myself, is the Niceyrig Base Plate for Sony ZV1. It looks like it might be even slimmer than the others while still moving that tripod mount out of the way so you can get to your SD card. I am not totally certain if it offers the best grip surface compared to the others, but it usually goes for a bit less than the premium brands. If you are really worried about the bulk, definitely skip the full cages and just stick to those simple baseplates.
