I just got this RX100 VII for my trip to Tokyo next week and man the battery life is actually garbage. I was looking at those Wasabi Power packs on Amazon because they're cheap but then I saw a bunch of posts saying they swell up and get stuck in the slot and now I'm kinda terrified to put anything but Sony brand in there. But the official ones are like 50 bucks for one battery which is insane.

I need something that:

  • wont swell or get stuck
  • comes with a dual charger
  • stays under $50 for a pair
  • can actually handle 4k video

Anyone actually used a third party brand for a long time without issues or should I just bite the bullet and overpay for the Sony ones...

I have been using the BM Premium NP-BX1 Battery and Charger Kit for quite some time and I am very satisfied with the results. Technically speaking, these packs use high-quality lithium cells that manage the high-drain requirements of 4K video much better than the bottom-tier generic brands. The swelling issue usually happens when cheap cells overheat during high-bitrate recording, but these have remained stable for me through dozens of cycles. Honestly, no complaints here regarding the fit or the overall runtime. The kit includes a dual charger which is much more efficient than charging inside the camera via USB. It works well for travel because you can charge two packs at once while you are back at the hotel. For under thirty dollars, it is a very reliable alternative to the overpriced Sony originals and they definitely wont get stuck in your slot. Youll be happy with them for your Tokyo trip.

Saw this earlier but just now getting around to it. Honestly, the NP-BX1 form factor is a nightmare for 4k video because the capacity is so low to begin with. Most of these third-party cells unfortunately use lower-grade lithium that sags under high current draw. I tried some cheap ones and they died at 20 percent when recording 4k because the voltage dropped too fast. Total letdown. If you're trying to stay under 50 bucks and avoid the swelling issues, check these out:

  • Newmowa NP-BX1 Replacement Battery 2-Pack and Dual USB Charger
  • Usually about 20 dollars, and they fit better than Wasabi in my experience.
  • Kastar NP-BX1 High Capacity Battery 3-Pack with LCD Charger
  • Great value for a Tokyo trip where you'll be shooting all day. Technically, you're looking for cells that can handle the 3.6V nominal voltage without dropping too fast under load. The Newmowa ones have been fairly reliable for me without getting stuck in the tray, though they still dont quite match the Sony runtime. One tip tho... if you really want to save money, get a decent power bank like Anker PowerCore 10000 Portable Charger and just charge via USB between locations. It saves you from buying ten batteries and is way more efficient for 4k. You got this, Tokyo is gonna be epic even with the battery annoyances.
