Just picked up a Sony ZV-1F for travel vlogging and I’m super excited! I want to get the setup right from day one. I'm looking at the Sony shooting grip and maybe an external mic for better audio. Any specific SD cards or extra batteries you’d recommend for a beginner? What are your must-have essentials?

For your situation, I’d be careful cuz I’ve had issues with cheap gear failing. It was sooo annoying. - SD Cards: I use the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card V30—it’s $20 and actually reliable. - Batteries: The Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Dual USB Charger for Sony NP-BX1 is only $25, but unfortunately, they die fast. - Grip: Get the Ulanzi MT-08 Extendable Desktop Tripod for $15. Tbh it works fine for way less cash.

Respectfully, I'd consider another option cuz generic batteries died sooo fast on me. - Sony NP-BX1 Rechargeable Battery Pack
- Sony SF-G Series TOUGH UHS-II 128GB SDXC Card Way more reliable for high-bitrate 4K stuff tbh!

So basically the consensus is that you gotta be careful with power, tbh. People here are split between going cheap or sticking with the Sony originals. Honestly, after five years of vlogging, I've had issues with generic batteries swelling up in my ZV-1... it was sooo annoying and almost ruined the body. > Any specific SD cards or extra batteries you’d recommend for a beginner? What are your must-have essentials? If ur on a budget, skip the "Tough" cards for now. They're awesome but highkey overkill for a beginner ZV-1F setup. I actually recommend the Kingston Canvas Go! Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-I V30. It's usually under 20 bucks and I've never had one fail on me yet. Also, you mentioned audio—the internal mic is okay with the deadcat, but it catches way too much ambient noise. I once tried a super cheap unbranded shotgun mic and it was honestly worse than the camera. Seriously, just grab the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone. It's about $40, sounds way better, and doesn't need its own battery which is a total lifesaver when you're traveling. TL;DR from this thread: Everyone agrees you need extra juice and fast cards. Reply #1 likes the SanDisk budget route, but Reply #2 warns that the ZV-1F is picky. My advice? Spend the savings on a decent mic like the Movo or maybe a SmallRig Cage for Sony ZV-1F if you want to mount more gear later. Cheers! peace

Honestly, looking at the market data for these compact rigs, people often overlook the specific audio signal path on the ZV-1F. Since it already has a decent internal mic, you really want an external one that actually improves the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) without adding a ton of bulk. Comparing two common audio paths:

  • Rode VideoMicro II: This is basically the gold standard for compact vlogging. Pros: It doesnt need a battery and has a super cardioid pattern which is great for isolation. Cons: It is definitely more expensive than the entry-level stuff.
  • Boya BY-MM1: This is the market alternative for people on a budget. Pros: Super affordable and usually includes a wind muff. Cons: Tbh the build quality feels a bit cheap and the shock mount is kinda flimsy (idk if it holds up long term). For SD cards, if you want something mid-range:
  • Samsung PRO Plus 128GB SDXC: I've found these have really consistent write speeds for 100Mbps 4K video, which is what the ZV-1F records at. TL;DR: Spend a bit more on the Rode for audio because the build quality is way better for travel. For storage, the Samsung Pro Plus is the sweet spot for price versus performance right now.
