Which small flash works best for Sony a6000 series?

Ive been shooting with my a6400 for a few years now and usually I just stick to natural light or my big studio strobes when Im home but I recently started doing more evening event work and realized my old Godox V860III is just way too massive for this tiny body. It makes the whole setup feel like its gonna tip over and its killing my wrist after like twenty minutes. I tried using the built-in flash but honestly its trash for anything other than a tiny bit of fill and I really hate that direct, flat look.

I need something that actually balances well on a small mirrorless body without sacrificing too much power. Im looking for:

  • TTL is a must because I dont have time to fiddle with manual settings during fast-paced events
  • HSS would be nice for outdoor portraits but its not a dealbreaker
  • Budget is around $150ish give or take
  • Needs to be small enough to fit in a jacket pocket

I was looking at the Godox TT350S since Im already in that ecosystem but I heard the recycle time is kinda slow on AAs compared to the Li-ion ones. Then theres that tiny Sony GN20 one but it looks a bit flimsy and the head doesnt rotate much. Has anyone tried the LightPix Labs ones? They look cool but maybe too gimmicky for actual work. Ive got a trip to Tokyo next month where Ill be doing a lot of night street stuff so I need to decide soon...

^ This. Also, I've spent years trying to downsize my kit without losing reliability. In my experience, nothing kills the vibe of a fast event like waiting for a flash to recycle while the moment passes. I once tried using a basic AA unit for a night shoot in Shinjuku and missed half my shots because it couldnt keep up.

Like someone mentioned, those recycle times are a headache, but I actually disagree that you have to jump straight to the expensive Li-ion stuff. I would suggest looking at the Meike MK-320S TTL Speedlite for Sony instead. It is super budget-friendly and fits the a6400 perfectly. Just be careful with a few things:

  • It might feel a bit plasticky compared to Godox
  • Make sure to use high-quality rechargeables to help the speed It is tiny enough for a jacket pocket, which sounds perfect for your Tokyo trip! Good luck!

Honestly, finding a flash that doesnt turn an a6400 into a front-heavy mess is just exhausting. I spent a whole event in London last year fighting with a setup that kept wanting to twist my wrist... it was a total nightmare and basically ruined the night for me. Its so frustrating that we have to choose between cheap plastic toys or massive bricks that belong on a full-frame body. I was just venting about this to a buddy because it really kills the joy of shooting mirrorless. If you want something that actually holds up without the bulk, here are two I have used:

  • Sony HVL-F28RM Compact External Flash
  • It usually hits around 240 bucks so it blows your budget, but the build is miles better. The integration with the camera brain is way more reliable for TTL than third-party stuff.
  • Nissin i40 Compact Flash for Sony
  • This one is tiny but has a high guide number. The physical dials are great because you dont have to squint at a tiny LCD screen in the dark. Just keep in mind that these small units can still overheat if you push them too hard. It is just the trade-off for not wanting a giant brick on your camera.

I was really disappointed with the Godox TT350S Mini TTL Speedlight... that 2.2s recycle time on AAs is just brutal. Unfortunately, most tiny flashes have that issue. If you can stretch the budget slightly, the Godox V350S Li-ion TTL Speedlight is the only real fix since the lithium battery makes it way snappier.

  • 0.1 to 1.7s recycle time
  • 500 full-power flashes
  • Full TTL and HSS support
  • Weighs only 290g

> I was looking at the Godox TT350S since Im already in that ecosystem but I heard the recycle time is kinda slow on AAs ngl I have this exact same issue with my a6600 and it is honestly so annoying. I have been dealing with this for like three months now and still nothing really fits the bill. I have spent way too much time comparing the voltage requirements and capacitor discharge rates across different brands and nothing seems to balance right on the hot shoe. You really have to be careful with the torque on those tiny plastic mounts too... I am constantly worried I am gonna snap something if I move too fast. I am actually planning a trip soon too, though not to Tokyo. Last time I was in Japan I spent way too much time in those massive multi-story electronics stores in Akihabara just staring at the rows of lighting gear. The sheer amount of stuff is overwhelming but even there I couldn't find a small flash that didn't feel like a toy. I ended up getting distracted by these vintage film cameras they had in the basement level and almost missed my train to Kyoto because I was haggling over an old rangefinder. anyway... it is just a nightmare trying to find gear that actually works.
