I has a Sony a6000 mirrorless camera and was wondering if there's a way to use it as a high-quality webcam for video calls and streaming without having to purchase any additional software or hardware? I've heard some DSLR cameras can act as webcams by connecting via USB but not sure if the a6000 has this functionality or how to set it up. Any tips would be appreciated!
Yes, the Sony a6000 can definitely be used as a USB webcam! I do this all the time for video conferencing and live streaming. Here are the steps:
That's it! You now have a high-resolution webcam feed from your a6000 without needing any extra hardware. The video quality will blow away any basic webcam.
@manncy I tried this and it's not working for me. When I check my camera, my USB Connection is set to PC Remote, but it's grayed out, and when I click it, I see a message that says "This function is currently disabled." I am able to select the Sony Camera (Imaging Edge) as a camera source in my apps. But it's just black due to the PC Remote config not working. What can I do? TY
Thanks for the detailed steps! A couple additional tips I'd recommend:
The a6000 makes an awesome USB webcam, especially compared to the basic webcams built into most laptops. Highly recommend giving it a try!
I've been using my a6000 as a webcam for months and can confirm it works great! A few other benefits besides superior image quality:
Only downside is you can't really use the camera for photos/videos while it's connected as a webcam. But for things like remote work, streaming, etc. it's been a game changer. 5 stars!
I am totally feeling your pain right now, twittenkeller! Honestly, I spent three hours yesterday trying to get my Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Camera and my Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens to work for a presentation and it was just a total disaster. I love the technical specs of this sensor so much - that 24.3MP APS-C quality is incredible - but the USB software is just... soul-crushing. I kept getting that same grayed-out PC Remote menu and I was literally shouting at my monitor! It's so heartbreaking when you have such amazing hardware but the connection just refuses to cooperate. Ngl I almost gave up on using it as a webcam entirely last night... the frustration is real. Quick tips:
Wow, I am going to have a try with my a6000

- Install the latest version of the Sony Imaging Edge Webcam software on your computer (available free from Sony's website)
- Connect your a6000 to your PC via the micro USB cable that came with the camera
- Open the Imaging Edge Webcam software and select your a6000 as the camera source
- In your video calling app (Zoom, Skype, etc) or streaming software, select the Imaging Edge Webcam as your video input source

Just followed your steps, it works, thanks.

Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your a6000. Go to the Setup menu on the camera, select Version, and check if your System Software is up to date. If not, download and install the latest version from Sony's support site.
Check that your USB cable is fully plugged in on both ends and try a different USB port on your computer if possible. Also test with a different USB cable if you have one available, to rule out any issues with the cable itself.
With the a6000 powered on and connected to your PC, go to the USB Connection setting in the camera's Setup menu. Try switching it to Mass Storage instead of PC Remote, then disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Switch it back to PC Remote and see if it stays selected now.
On your PC, open the Imaging Edge Webcam software, go to the Settings and look for an option to "Allow control from the computer" or similar. Make sure this is enabled.
As a last resort, try resetting all settings on your a6000 to the factory defaults. This will require you to set everything up again, but can sometimes resolve tricky issues like this.
@manncy So I went through the steps to install new firmware. But halfway through it stopped due to an unexpected event (or similar, don´t remember the exact note I got). And now, the red access light stays on and the camera doesn't respond. When I try running the firmware updater again, it just spins on "Run the update" because the camera isn't responding. 🙁 What should I do? Thanks
@manncy I finally got the firmware to update. But after I install the Imaging Edge Webcam software, I can't find it to open it (perhaps it's just auto?). All I see is the Image Edge Desktop, Remote and Viewer, and none of these allow video. In my Applications I have an Image edge folder that contains Edit, Remote, and Viewer. I also have and Imaging Edge Desktop app in the Applications folder. When I launch Zoom I see Sony Camera (Imaging Edge) as a video source. However, it's just black when I select it, and it's clearly not showing what the camera sees. My camera is set to video mode. I'm in USB Connection > PC Remote (it's grayed out on my camera), and when I try to go into it, it says "This function is currently not allowed.". What do I try next? This is painful!
@manncy I can't switch from Mass Storage to PC Remote with the USB cable plugged in. But when I unplug the USB, switch to PC Remote, then turn the camera back on, I see "Connecting...USB" for about 1 second before that screen goes away and shows my main camera screen. I've spent hours trying to get this to work. 🙁

Hi, twittenkeller, I suggest you watch this video setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIC_CzNjfq8 May give you some help.
@henry I followed the video, got all of the components, and still cannot get it to work. I'm so f-ing frustrated.
To use your old Sony a6000 as a USB webcam, you'll need to connect the camera to your computer using a micro HDMI cable and an HDMI to USB capture card. Set the camera to movie mode, ensuring it's in manual focus and auto-exposure settings. Install any necessary drivers for the capture card, then connect it to your computer via USB. Select the capture card as your webcam source in your video conferencing software. Adjust the camera's settings for optimal video quality, such as setting it to 1080p resolution and adjusting exposure and white balance manually.
@iamuzair I have all of the necessary components, and no matter what I do I cannot get video from my A6000. So frustrated!
