So I finally saved up and bought the Sony ZV-E10 because everyone said it was the best for beginners like me but I didnt really think about the sound part until I started filming some test clips in my backyard. The wind was so loud you couldnt even hear me talking and the little fluffy thing that came with the camera didnt really do much. I feel like such a dummy but I dont even know what I should be looking for. My logic was that if the mic is on top of the camera it would pick up my voice better but then I saw people using those wireless blocks and now Im totally lost.
So I was thinking about these options:
Im heading to Japan in about three weeks to start a travel channel and I really want it to sound okay but my budget is only around 100 or 150 dollars. I keep seeing the brand Rode pop up but then I worry about if they need batteries or if they just plug in and work right away. Is there a specific one that works best with the Sony shoe mount thing? I dont want to carry a bunch of cables around if I can help it. If anyone has used this camera for walking and talking id love to know what you use...
Jumping in here since I've spent way too much time looking at frequency response charts and polar patterns lately lol. If you really want to lean into that Sony shoe mount thing (its called an MI Shoe), I've been really satisfied with the Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone. Its usually right around $150 and is a total lifesaver if you hate cables. Here is why it works well for travel:
> my budget is only around 100 or 150 dollars I would suggest Rode VideoMic GO II Shotgun Microphone since it wont need batteries, but be careful with wind; the Sony ECM-G1 Vlogger Shotgun Microphone is cleaner without cables.
The Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone System is fantastic! It uses the MI shoe so there arent any cables to break, making it incredibly reliable for your amazing Japan trip!
Same here!
> those little squares that clip to your collar Building on the earlier suggestion, if you want that square style but find the Sony wireless gear a bit pricey, you absolutely gotta check out the Hollyland Lark M1 Wireless Lavalier Microphone! Its fantastic for travel because the case charges the mics while youre walking around Japan. Comparing brands, I actually prefer the Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone over the Rode VideoMicro stuff for this specific camera. The Sennheiser has the shock mount and wind protection built inside the body, so it stays super compact and wont block your flip-out screen like those big fluffy deadcats do! Love how it looks on the ZV-E10. Quick tip: Grab a cheap 3.5mm right-angle adapter if the cable sticks out too far, it keeps the setup way cleaner when youre vlogging handheld.
