Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Sony a6400 and I’m loving it, but I’m ready to move past the basic kit lens. I’m looking for some affordable prime lenses that won't break the bank—ideally under $350 each. I mostly do street photography and occasionally some portraits, so I've been eyeing the Sigma Contemporary line or maybe some Viltrox options. I really need something with a wider aperture for better low-light performance and that nice background blur. Since there are so many choices, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the reviews. Which budget-friendly primes would you recommend as the absolute 'must-haves' for a sharp APS-C setup like this?

Its basically the gold standard for budget Sony APS-C primes cuz its sharp as a tack and handles street and portraits perfectly. If you want something wider, the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 E is a killer value alternative for ur setup!!

sooo i totally get the struggle! kit lenses are okay but a wide aperture really changes everything for low light. here's what i recommend for ur a6400: - Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E: amazing all-rounder. it's the sharpest for the price, but focal length feels a bit tight for street.
- Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 AF for Sony E-mount: way better for wider shots! build quality is cool, tho not as crisp as sigma. both are fantastic values!! gl!

If you want the best possible portrait lens for this system, you gotta look at the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. It is ridiculously sharp and the bokeh is super smooth for a crop sensor. For street stuff, the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE is a solid budget pick. Its tiny and discrete, which is perfect for not drawing attention to yourself. Tbh, while Sigma is the king of sharpness, dont sleep on the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 E either. Its usually a bit cheaper and still gives you that wide aperture for low light. If you find yourself struggling with shaky shots, the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is worth hunting for used. Since the a6400 doesnt have internal stabilization, having OSS in the lens makes a huge difference for handheld street shots at night. Just some food for thought while you're shopping around.

I'd suggest Sigma, but make sure to think about your focal length... do you prefer wide street shots or tighter portraits? Tbh, it'll definitely change your choice.
